Hike overview
The Whiskey Creek Walk is a serene and undulating track that offers nature lovers a peaceful escape in Mount Jerusalem National Park, located roughly 30 minutes from Murwillumbah and Mullumbimby. Spanning 5.5km, this Grade 3 hike typically takes about 1.5 hours to complete. The track begins at the Unicorn Falls carpark and gently winds through a mix of eucalypt woodland and sub-tropical rainforest, following a crystal-clear creek. Along the way, you’ll pass through a section of the Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk, which is set to open in 2025. Keep your eyes peeled for the blueberry ash tree, known for its white spring flowers and the summer berries that give it its name.
The walk’s quiet beauty is a haven for wildlife, and you’ll likely spot shy Albert’s lyrebirds or red-legged pademelons moving through the undergrowth. As you follow the creek line, take time to admire the lush rainforest, where the wonga wonga vine wraps itself around the trees and the bangalow palm stands out with its red berries in winter. The loop section of the track features a steep climb out of Whiskey Creek, so be sure to conserve some energy for the ascent before continuing back to the carpark.
The sounds of nature are ever-present, from the distinctive call of the catbird to the croaks of frogs when the creek fills with water. Keep an eye on the rocks along the creek, as eastern water dragons and other lizards often bask in the sun. For those with more time to explore, combining this walk with the nearby Unicorn Falls walking track offers an added reward: a peaceful waterfall tucked away in the rainforest, perfect for a quiet break after your hike.
Tips
- What to bring: Drinking water, hat, personal locator beacon, snacks, sturdy shoes, suitable clothing, sunscreen, raincoat.
- There is a steep section as you ascend out of Whiskey Creek.
- The track features several creek crossings on stepping stones, which can be slippery after rain, so take care.
- During periods of high rainfall, be prepared to wade through shallow water.
- For the most comfortable experience, it’s best to tackle this walk between April and October when the weather is cooler and humidity is lower.
