Leave a plan with someone you know
Heading out for a hike, travelling remotely, or exploring unfamiliar terrain? A written trip plan is one of the simplest and most effective safety steps you can take. Within the Hiking Safety Systems framework, it strengthens your Communication and Rescue system and builds accountability into your Decision-Making system before you even step onto the trail.
Use this Trail Hiking Australia trip intentions form to record the critical details of your walk, including your planned route, expected timings, vehicle information, emergency contacts, and key equipment. Once submitted, a PDF summary will be emailed to you and your nominated trusted contact. The PDF includes clear instructions on when and how they should contact Police on 000 and request Search and Rescue if you are overdue.
Submitting this form does not trigger an automatic rescue response. Your nominated contact must know your planned return time and understand their role. Agree on a clear late-back time before you leave, and ensure they are willing to act if required.
If you carry a Personal Locator Beacon, ensure it is registered with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. You can also upload your completed trip intentions PDF to your AMSA beacon profile for additional context in an emergency.
Before completing the form, please read the privacy policy. A summary of relevant privacy information is included at the end of the form.
