Hike overview
Immerse yourself in the beauty of Cocoparra National Park on the Store Creek walking track, a birdwatcher's paradise just 30 minutes from Griffith. This easy to moderate 2.5km loop offers a delightful escape into nature, taking roughly 1-2 hours to complete.
The adventure begins at Store Creek picnic area, complete with amenities like toilets, a gas barbecue, and parking. From there, follow the path as it winds alongside Store Creek, leading you through open woodland and onwards towards a captivating rocky gorge. As you meander through this bimble box wonderland, marvel at the vibrant hues adorning the steep cliffs.
This track is a haven for bird enthusiasts – keep your binoculars handy! Watch for the flitting turquoise parrots, the sleek dusky woodswallows, and the charming speckled warblers amongst the branches. In the shady areas, you might even spot the common brown butterfly fluttering by.
For a truly unforgettable wildflower experience, plan your visit for late winter to late spring. The vibrant displays of tufted bluebells, delicate pink finger orchids, and golden everlastings will leave you breathless.
And for the seasoned adventurer? The journey continues! Extend your exploration by following Store Creek for another 2km beyond the marked track. This off-trail path takes you alongside the creek, requiring some scrambling over small rock ledges to reach an impressive natural amphitheatre – a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Tips
- There are some dry creek crossings to navigate.
- If you continue past the end of the walkway to the stone amphitheatre, this is another 4km return on an unformed walkway. Allow another 1.5 to 2.5 hours for this extension. This extension is advised for experienced walkers only.
