Goulds Lagoon Sanctuary is a 2km, grade 2 hike in Granton, Tasmania. This hike typically takes 45 minutes to complete.
Hike Overview
Take a gentle stroll through the thriving sanctuary of Gould's Lagoon and quietly explore the boardwalk leading to the bird hide. Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938 by the request of its then-owner Arthur Gould, Gould's Lagoon is a haven for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers alike. This 2km, grade 2 walk, in Goulds Lagoon Sanctuary, Tasmania, should take around 45 minutes to complete.
Encircled by native habitat and grasslands, Gould's Lagoon Sanctuary hosts hundreds of wildlife species. Over one hundred bird species have been observed here, making it one of the premier birdwatching spots in the Hobart region. During dry spells on mainland Australia, many rare bird species seek refuge at this permanent lagoon.
As you walk, listen for the lorikeets chattering noisily in the trees, observe ducks enjoying the sunny weather, and spot cormorants drying their wings while perched on poles. The trail offers a serene and immersive nature experience.
For a longer walk, the trail can be extended by linking it to the Whitestone Point trail for a coastal experience, or you can retrace your steps back to the carpark and walk along Hestercombe Road. How many species can you spot on your visit to this sanctuary?
