The Old Beach Foreshore Trail is a 4km, grade 2 hike in Old Beach, Tasmania, typically taking about 1.25 hours to complete.
Starting at Jetty Road, you'll find a jetty and boat launch ramp with historical significance. This jetty was once part of a ferry service established in 1816 by two former convicts, John Earle and James Austin, who started the service after completing their sentences for stealing honey and beehives. John Earle ran the ferry from Old Beach, while James Austin operated from what is now known as Austin’s Ferry on the western shore.
From the jetty, head eastward to Cassidy’s Bay. The trail follows a beautiful foreshore, featuring expansive salt marshes and abundant bird life. Along the way, you'll enjoy stunning views of kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Return via the same route.

About the region
Old Beach is a suburb of Hobart based in the municipality of Brighton, Tasmania. Old Beach Post Office opened on 11 January 1866 and closed in 1975. Old beach is surrounded by an abundance of green mountainous terrain. At the heart of Old beach is an old mining quarry. Active in the late 1980s for the mining of Sandstone, providing and economic boost for the area.
