Hike overview
The Broad Swamp to Birds Rock walking track is a 17.5 kilometre, grade 3 hike in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area, near Lithgow in New South Wales. Allow around seven to eight hours to complete this one-way walk, and keep in mind that you will need two 4WD vehicles for a car shuffle, as the Birds Rock carpark is only accessible by four-wheel drive.
The journey begins along the Broad Swamp loop walk, where the track winds through the largest section of Newnes Plateau Shrub Swamp in the reserve. Raised bog bridges and stepping stones guide you across damp ground, and if you pause for a moment you may hear the soft calls of scarlet and flame robins among the reeds and shrubs. Beyond the swamp, the track rises and falls across rugged ground, moving between deep gullies and ridgetops that open onto sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
After a stretch through open eucalypt bushland, the first striking pagoda rock formations come into view around 3.5 kilometres in. Their layered sandstone shapes are a hallmark of the area and set the tone for the geological variety that follows. Soon after, the track descends into a cool gully shaded by tall Blue Mountains ash. Here the path meanders past creeks and through narrow canyons, offering a refreshing change of pace before the next climb.
At about the 7.5 kilometre mark, the track challenges you with a steep ascent of roughly 100 metres. A series of winding steps leads to a clifftop vantage point overlooking the headwaters of Carne Creek. This is a natural place to pause, catch your breath, and take in the expansive views before continuing on.
Not far beyond lies the junction for Carne View lookout. A short side trip of 650 metres each way rewards you with a striking outlook over sheer cliffs above Carne Creek, with Pyramid Rock just visible above the canopy. The detour adds around 1.5 kilometres to your day but is well worth the effort.
From the junction, the track continues along a fire trail for another three kilometres, climbing steadily until it reaches Birds Rock carpark. From here, it is about a half-hour drive back to Broad Swamp carpark to complete the shuffle. For those with a 4WD looking for a shorter walk, the 3 kilometre return track from Birds Rock carpark to Carne View lookout offers a taste of the scenery without committing to the full day hike.

Getting to the trailhead: Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area.
The Broad Swamp to Birds Rock walking track is located in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area, just outside Lithgow in New South Wales. To reach the Broad Swamp trailhead, start from the corner of Bridge Street and Main Street in Lithgow and follow the signs. From Bridge Street, turn right onto Inch Street, then left onto Atkinson Street. After about 750 metres, keep right onto State Mine Gully Road, which soon becomes Glowworm Tunnel Road. Continue for 11 kilometres until you reach the junction with Western Boundary Road, then turn left and drive a further 250 metres to arrive at Broad Swamp carpark. This informal gravel area marks the beginning of the walk and is suitable for standard vehicles in dry conditions.
To access Birds Rock carpark, which sits at the other end of the track, you will need a high-clearance 4WD. About the region
Just 5km from Lithgow in New South Wales and around 150km northwest of Sydney, Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area offers a fascinating mix of dramatic landscapes, rich history, and rewarding bushwalks. Only a 2.5-hour drive from the city, it’s an easy day trip for those keen to explore something different in the Blue Mountains region.
The park connects Wollemi, Blue Mountains, and Gardens of Stone national parks and sits on Wiradjuri Country. Its centrepiece, the Newnes Plateau, is the highest sandstone plateau in the Blue Mountains, supporting rare ecosystems and a surprising diversity of wildlife.
Walks here reveal spectacular natural features. Towering sandstone cliffs, deep gullies, and narrow canyons cut through the land, while the park’s most striking attraction—the fragile ‘platy’ pagodas—stand proudly with their distinctive ironstone banding. A hike along the Lost City track not only offers sweeping views of these formations but also uncovers relics of the region’s mining past, with old dams and industrial remains scattered through the forest.
This conservation area is also a sanctuary for plants and animals. It protects endangered swamps and shrublands unique to the plateau, along with species such as the glossy black cockatoo, regent honeyeater, and spotted-tailed quoll. Keen eyes may also catch sight of the Giant Dragonfly or the Blue Mountains water skink.
For those seeking more than bushwalks, there are limited 4WD and cycling routes, as well as vehicle-based camping. The park is also perfectly positioned for side trips—if you’re heading to the Glow Worm Tunnel in Wollemi National Park, the Lost City is directly on the way from Lithgow.
Each season offers something different: autumn’s crisp mornings, spring’s wildflower displays, summer’s dramatic sandstone shadows, and winter’s cool, clear days. Whether you’re after a short family walk or a full-day hike, this park has plenty to offer across all trails.

1 Review on “Broad Swamp to Birds Rock Walking Track (17.5km)”
A long but memorable walk, this track moves through remote sandstone country with plenty of variety along the way. It feels wild and quiet, with Birds Rock a satisfying finish after a solid day on the trail.
