Walking Among the Sandstone Pagodas of Gardens of Stone
Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area is a place where history, geology, and nature come together in striking fashion. Just 5km from Lithgow in New South Wales and around 150km northwest of Sydney, it’s an easy 2.5-hour drive from the state’s capital, making it a perfect day trip or weekend adventure.
The park links Wollemi, Blue Mountains, and Gardens of Stone national parks, creating a vast protected landscape on Wiradjuri Country. At its heart is the Newnes Plateau, the highest sandstone plateau in the Blue Mountains. This elevated environment shelters unique plant communities and supports a rich variety of wildlife, making every visit rewarding for bushwalkers and nature lovers alike.
Geology enthusiasts will be drawn to the striking sandstone formations that define the area. Deep slot canyons, rugged cliffs, and dramatic gullies cut through the land, but it’s the sculptural ‘platy’ pagodas that capture most attention. With their delicate ironstone banding, these ancient structures are not only beautiful but also nationally significant. Walks such as the Lost City track provide the chance to see these formations up close while also uncovering relics of Newnes’ mining history, from old dams to industrial remains hidden among the trees.
The conservation area is also an important refuge for plants and animals. Endangered ecosystems such as the Newnes Plateau shrub and montane swamps are found here, along with species that exist nowhere else, including the Newnes Plateau geebung. Birdwatchers and hikers may spot glossy black cockatoos, regent honeyeaters, or even a spotted-tailed quoll, while the Giant Dragonfly and Blue Mountains water skink represent just some of the park’s more unusual residents.
For those who enjoy variety in their outdoor adventures, the park offers more than just bushwalks. Limited 4WD tracks and cycling routes are available, with a few vehicle-accessible campsites scattered across the reserve. If you’re already planning a trip to the famous Glow Worm Tunnel in nearby Wollemi National Park, a stop at the Lost City is an easy addition to your itinerary.
Reaching the park is straightforward, with entry points accessible from Lithgow either via State Mine Gully Road or through Clarence near the Zig Zag Railway. Each route offers its own sense of anticipation as the pagodas and plateaus reveal themselves.
Every season has its charm. Autumn brings crisp mornings, perfect for longer hikes and family trips. Spring transforms the bush with blooming waratahs, boronias, and wattles, creating ideal conditions for walking and cycling. Summer light adds drama to the sandstone cliffs, though the heat can be intense, while winter’s cool, clear days make exploring the fire trails and walking tracks a delight.
