Hike overview
The Broad Swamp Loop Walk is a 6 kilometre grade 3 hike in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area, not far from Lithgow in New South Wales. Allow one to two hours to complete the circuit, which is short enough to fit into a half day yet full of variety and interest along the way. The track leads through the largest swamp in the park, a landscape that supports the endangered Newnes Plateau Shrub Swamp ecological community, making it both a scenic and ecologically significant place to explore.
Starting from Broad Swamp carpark, the loop is best walked in a clockwise direction. After crossing Western Boundary Road to reach the trailhead, the track soon passes a series of bog bridges about a kilometre in. These wooden planks help protect the fragile ground while offering close views of the swamp environment. Scarlet and flame robins are often heard here, their calls carrying across the wetlands. At around the three kilometre point, the loop passes the junction with the longer Broad Swamp to Birds Rock walk before continuing across the swamp itself. There is no constructed bridge here, so care is needed when stepping through the shallow creek, especially after rain when water can reach ankle depth.
Once across, the track leads through open grassy woodland, where wallabies are a common sight and echidnas may be spotted foraging among the shrubs. Overhead, a Swamp Harrier might be seen gliding in search of prey. The loop eventually returns to Western Boundary Road before finishing back at the carpark. If time allows, a side trip to Lost City lookout is well worth considering. Located about a 20 minute drive from Broad Swamp carpark, this spot offers striking views over the sandstone pagoda formations that characterise the region, with picnic tables providing a place to rest and take it all in.

Getting there
Getting to the trailhead: Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area.
The Broad Swamp Loop Walk begins from Broad Swamp carpark in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area, a short drive from Lithgow. From the corner of Bridge Street and Main Street in Lithgow, follow the signs directing you towards State Mine Gully Road. Turn right onto Inch Street, then left onto Atkinson Street. After about 750 metres, keep right and continue along State Mine Gully Road, which soon turns into Glowworm Tunnel Road. Stay on this road for 11 kilometres until you reach the junction with Western Boundary Road, then turn left and drive for another 250 metres to arrive at the carpark.
Access to Broad Swamp is generally straightforward, with most roads suitable for 2WD vehicles in dry conditions, although the gravel surfaces can become slippery after rain. In wet weather, a 4WD is recommended. The carpark itself is a simple gravel area at the start of the walking track and is not suitable for long vehicles. It provides a convenient base for the walk, though there are no formal facilities, so it’s best to come prepared with everything you’ll need for the day.

About the region
Just 5km from Lithgow in New South Wales and around 150km northwest of Sydney, Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area offers a fascinating mix of dramatic landscapes, rich history, and rewarding bushwalks. Only a 2.5-hour drive from the city, it’s an easy day trip for those keen to explore something different in the Blue Mountains region.
The park connects Wollemi, Blue Mountains, and Gardens of Stone national parks and sits on Wiradjuri Country. Its centrepiece, the Newnes Plateau, is the highest sandstone plateau in the Blue Mountains, supporting rare ecosystems and a surprising diversity of wildlife.
Walks here reveal spectacular natural features. Towering sandstone cliffs, deep gullies, and narrow canyons cut through the land, while the park’s most striking attraction—the fragile ‘platy’ pagodas—stand proudly with their distinctive ironstone banding. A hike along the Lost City track not only offers sweeping views of these formations but also uncovers relics of the region’s mining past, with old dams and industrial remains scattered through the forest.
This conservation area is also a sanctuary for plants and animals. It protects endangered swamps and shrublands unique to the plateau, along with species such as the glossy black cockatoo, regent honeyeater, and spotted-tailed quoll. Keen eyes may also catch sight of the Giant Dragonfly or the Blue Mountains water skink.
For those seeking more than bushwalks, there are limited 4WD and cycling routes, as well as vehicle-based camping. The park is also perfectly positioned for side trips—if you’re heading to the Glow Worm Tunnel in Wollemi National Park, the Lost City is directly on the way from Lithgow.
Each season offers something different: autumn’s crisp mornings, spring’s wildflower displays, summer’s dramatic sandstone shadows, and winter’s cool, clear days. Whether you’re after a short family walk or a full-day hike, this park has plenty to offer across all trails.
