Trail Fast Facts
Blue Range Hut to Sherwood Homestead Hike is a 9.8km, grade 3 hike in Blue Range Recreation Area, ACT. This hike typically takes 4 hours to complete.
Hike Overview
Embark on a journey through time in the Blue Range Recreation Area, leading you from Blue Range Hut to the evocative remnants of Sherwood Homestead. Established in 1863 by Henry and Eliza Phillips, this heritage-listed site whispers stories of a bygone era.
Scattered stones from the fireplace and a tapestry of exotic trees hint at the layout of the original homestead, which is now gone. Spring transforms the landscape into a vibrant spectacle as thousands of daffodils, likely planted by the Phillips family, erupt in color. Imagine the former glory of the gardens, bursting with flowers, cherry trees, apple orchards, walnut groves, and raspberry bushes.
Atop Ropers Hill, overlooking the homestead, stands a lone sentinel – the weathered stump of a once-majestic oak tree. This is the final resting place of Henry, Eliza, and their infant son, marked by a wooden fence and a commemorative plaque. The Phillips' legacy extends beyond the homestead. Sherwood remains a popular destination for walkers and cyclists from the Blue Range Recreation Area. Spring's floral explosion in early September is particularly captivating, but autumn's vibrant hues also paint a breathtaking scene.
