The Capable Hiker: A Practical Guide to Hiking in Australia

Serious trouble on a hike is often not the result of one dramatic mistake. It develops through smaller decisions, changing conditions and missed opportunities to respond.

The Capable Hiker is a complete, practical guide to hiking safely and confidently in Australia. It explains what to check, what to carry, what to pay attention to, and how ordinary decisions — a later-than-planned start, slower progress, changing weather, an overlooked junction — can combine until a manageable situation becomes much harder to control.

Drawing on decades of bushwalking, extensive hiking across Australia and remote long-distance treks overseas, and years spent researching and communicating hiking safety through Trail Hiking Australia, Darren Edwards connects practical advice with the reasoning behind it.

The aim is not simply to tell you what to do. It is to help you understand why things matter so you can make better decisions on walks this book could never specifically cover.

What this book does

Becoming capable isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about developing enough judgement to notice what matters, recognise when circumstances are changing, and act while you still have good options available.

The book follows the full arc of a hike, from choosing a walk that suits your skills and experience through to preparation, planning, equipment, decisions on the trail, dealing with problems and learning from what happened afterwards.

The Capable Hiker:

  • Explains what to check, carry and prepare for before you leave home
  • Shows how small, ordinary decisions can combine into more serious situations
  • Helps you recognise when reality is starting to differ from the plan
  • Covers choosing a hike, preparing for it, walking it and responding when things go wrong
  • Explains the reasoning behind recommendations rather than simply telling you what to do
  • Helps you build judgement that can be applied to unfamiliar walks and changing conditions

This is not a checklist to memorise. It is a way of understanding hiking well enough to make good decisions when circumstances don’t unfold exactly as expected.

Who it is for

The Capable Hiker is written for anyone who wants to become more capable and self-reliant on the trail, including:

  • People preparing for their first hikes in Australia
  • Experienced hikers who know there are still gaps in their knowledge
  • Bushwalkers who want to understand the reasoning behind good decisions rather than simply follow rules
  • Group leaders and people introducing friends or family to hiking

You don’t need to be planning remote expeditions or difficult walks. Much of the book is about making better decisions on ordinary hiking days.

Where this fits

If you want one complete, practical guide to hiking safely in Australia — covering preparation, equipment, navigation, weather, trail judgement, emergencies and learning from experience — The Capable Hiker is the place to start.

It brings together the ideas explored across Darren’s earlier books into a single, connected guide built around judgement and capability.

For readers who want to explore particular areas in more detail, Small Things Don’t Stay Small looks closely at the early warning signs and small decisions that can develop into larger problems, while the Hiking Australia volumes Before You Go and On The Trail focus separately on preparation and what happens once the walk begins.

Darren Edwards is the founder of Trail Hiking Australia, a search and rescue volunteer, and the author of multiple books on hiking safety and decision-making in Australian conditions. He is also the creator of The Hiking Safety Systems Framework (HSSF) and ExploreSafe Framework for Outdoor Decision-Making.

With decades of field experience, Darren focuses on how incidents actually develop on the trail, where small errors compound under pressure. Through his writing, he provides practical, systems-based guidance to help hikers plan better, recognise early warning signs, and make sound decisions in changing conditions.

He has been interviewed by ABC Radio National (PM), ABC Radio National (Life Matters), and ABC News Breakfast to discuss bushwalking safety and risk awareness across Australia.
