Poimena Reserve presents a 3km, grade 3 hike in Austins Ferry, Tasmania, typically requiring about 1.25 hours to complete. Perched atop a small hill beside Roseneath Rivulet, the reserve offers sweeping views of the Derwent River to the east and kunanyi / Mount Wellington to the west. Its diverse landscape encompasses native white gum, peppermint, and blue gum woodlands, along with meticulously managed parkland.
As a designated Land for Wildlife area, Poimena Reserve is home to a variety of fauna, including native marsupials like bandicoots and an array of bird species, totaling over 72. Additionally, the reserve provides habitat for rare beetles and herbaceous plants. To safeguard these inhabitants, dogs are prohibited in the lower half of the reserve and must be leashed and remain on designated trails in the upper section.
Grade 3 (Moderate) - Walks for Most Fitness Levels: Grade 3 on the
AWTGS represents moderate walking tracks. These are ideal for walkers with some fitness who are comfortable with some hills and uneven terrain. While suitable for most ages, some bushwalking experience is recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Tracks may have short, steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps. The total distance of a Grade 3 walk can be up to 20 kilometers.
