Safety advice
Walking in the Shoalhaven River Gorge will involve river crossings. River levels rise unexpectedly. Routes in and out of the area may be indistinct and hard to find.
Hike overview
The White Track offers a challenging adventure for experienced hikers (grade 4) in Bungonia National Park. The total distance is 5.5 kilometers and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. However, there's a shorter option: a leisurely 2-kilometer return walk (grade 2) to Mount Ayre Lookout with beautiful views of the Shoalhaven River.
The initial section to the lookout is an undulating, mostly shaded track with a good chance of spotting lyrebirds. Beyond the lookout, the difficulty level increases. The 1.7-kilometer descent to the Shoalhaven River is steep and challenging (grade 4).
Reaching the river signifies the halfway point, as you'll return via the same route. It's important to note that venturing further into the Shoalhaven River Gorge is only recommended for experienced bushwalkers due to multiple river crossings and the risk of flash flooding. Avoid this section after heavy rain, as water levels can rise unexpectedly and obscure entry and exit routes.
Given the challenging terrain, safety is important. As with other hikes in Bungonia National Park, register your trip at the park office before setting off and inform someone of your planned route and estimated return time.
