Savage River and Link Track (9km)

Dark, tea-coloured water and dense west coast rainforest give Pieman River State Reserve a very particular feel, even by Tasmanian standards. Near Corinna, the reserve follows the lower Pieman and takes in the stretch where several wild rivers, including the Savage, meet before the Pieman turns west toward the coast. It sits on the southern edge of takayna / Tarkine, in a country of wet forest, river flats and deeply folded terrain that feels more like a river corridor than a broad parkland.

Although the reserve was proclaimed in 1999, the landscape it protects is much older in character. Huon pine survives along the riverbanks, mixed with myrtle, sassafras and other cool temperate rainforest species that thrive in the damp, sheltered gullies of Tasmania's north-west. The water itself is part of the atmosphere here: slow-moving in places, dark with tannins, and closely hemmed by forest so that the river often seems to carry the bush with it.

This part of the west coast also carries a long human history. Corinna was once a small mining township, and the Pieman was a working river for boats, piners and settlements that depended on water access through otherwise difficult country. That history helps explain why the reserve feels both remote and inhabited by traces of earlier industry. Upstream and in neighbouring catchments, mining left a legacy that affected river health, especially in the Savage River system, and the lower reaches within the reserve became part of the broader effort to restore aquatic life and water quality.

Pieman River State Reserve is not a large reserve by Tasmanian standards, about 3,892 hectares, but it protects a striking slice of the wider west coast river country. To the north, the Arthur-Pieman Conservation Area continues the larger takayna / Tarkine landscape, while to the south and east the country shifts toward the old mining and hydro landscapes of the west. For walkers, that wider setting matters. This is a place where rainforest, river history and the rough industrial past of the region all meet in one compact section of Tasmania.
