Hike overview
Mount Matheson Loop offers a compact but rewarding journey through the diverse landscapes of Nightcap National Park. Starting at Mount Nardi picnic area, this 3km track winds through lush rainforest, where the dense canopy hums with the calls of birds and the rustling of brush turkeys foraging in the undergrowth. Towering trees draped in moss create a cool, shaded pathway, with glimpses of filtered sunlight breaking through the foliage. As the track circles Mount Matheson, the rainforest gradually gives way to drier, open eucalypt forest near the escarpment. The contrast is striking—deep greens and tangled vines shift to towering gums and rocky outcrops, with occasional breaks in the trees revealing sweeping views across the valleys below.
Though relatively short, the walk has some steeper sections that may challenge those unaccustomed to bushwalking, making a reasonable level of fitness helpful. The loop connects seamlessly with other trails, allowing walkers to extend their journey. Pholis Gap is a great option for those wanting to turn the loop into a longer day hike, leading to a stunning lookout over the rugged Nightcap escarpment. For those seeking an even greater adventure, the historic Nightcap walking track continues further into the wilderness, offering opportunities for overnight hiking and bush camping.
The starting point at Mount Nardi picnic area provides a pleasant spot to relax before or after the walk. The grassy clearing is surrounded by towering trees, with a couple of barbecues and a picnic table for those wanting to linger a little longer in this peaceful corner of the park.
