Hike overview
Kitty’s Gorge Trail is a well-loved hike in Serpentine National Park, winding through a striking landscape of woodlands, granite outcrops, waterfalls, and seasonal wildflowers. At 16 kilometres return to the iconic Serpentine Falls, it’s a Grade 4 trail that requires a good level of fitness, with steep sections, loose stones, and uneven ground adding to the challenge. The effort is well rewarded, as the track follows the Serpentine River and Gooralong Brook, offering plenty of scenic spots along the way—especially when the brook is flowing after rain.
Located in the Perth Hills, about an hour’s drive southwest of Perth, this hike is one of Western Australia’s most popular day walks. It can be accessed from either end, starting at the Serpentine Falls car park or the Jarrahdale Cemetery car park. If beginning from Jarrahdale, a short detour onto Stacey’s Loop (1.9 kilometres) provides a gentler start before joining the main trail. The historic town of Jarrahdale, once a thriving timber hub, is now a gateway to some of the region’s best hikes, making it an ideal spot to grab a meal or coffee after your walk.
Kitty’s Gorge is particularly stunning in spring and autumn, when wildflowers and fungi add colour to the bushland. The cooler months also bring flowing waterfalls, creating even more photo opportunities along the way. While the trail is well-marked, the rough terrain and steep climbs make it better suited to those with some hiking experience. Whether you’re looking for a challenging bushwalk or a rewarding full-day adventure, this trail is a fantastic way to explore Serpentine National Park.
