Trail Fast Facts
Cape Naturaliste Track is a 4km, grade 2 hike in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, WA. This hike typically takes 2 hours to complete.
Hike Overview
The Cape Naturaliste Track, a leisurely 4km grade 2 loop nestled in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Western Australia, is a scenic delight. This westernmost section of the Cape Naturaliste Walk Trail Network treats you to breathtaking views as it leads you towards the cape's pinnacle, Naturaliste Lookout.
Your journey begins at the northernmost point of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, Cape Naturaliste. Established boardwalks and lookouts lead you into the coastal beauty. Follow the main path below the lighthouse buildings, heading clockwise along the Lighthouse Walk for nearly a kilometer. Take a left turn westward onto the Whale Lookout Track, followed by another left onto the Cape Naturaliste Track. As you gently descend towards the ocean, prepare to be mesmerised by the pounding surf at the cape's northwestern tip, unveiled from the Naturaliste Lookout.
A captivating geological marvel awaits - the "The Other Side of the Moon," a unique natural blow-out below the lookout. The track then takes a turn, winding north and east through a windswept, almost lunar-like landscape, where only rugged limestone rock formations stand defiant against the elements.
Soak in the coastal panorama for another 300 meters, traversing low heath and fragrant Rottnest Tea-tree (Melaleuca lanceolata) as you navigate above the sheer northern cliffs. This path eventually leads you to the Whale Lookout. From here, a final right turn uphill along the familiar Lighthouse Track brings you full circle, completing your exploration of the Cape Naturaliste Track.
I recognise and acknowledge Wardandi people as the traditional owners of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

About the region
Cape Naturaliste is the northernmost point of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge in and separates the relatively sheltered waters of Geographe Bay from the southern Indian Ocean.
The 20m high lighthouse stands on a 100m bluff overlooking Geographe Bay. It was built in 1903 using limestone carted by bullock wagon from a quarry about 1.5km away. The three original keepers’ quarters are still standing.
The lighthouse is now an automatic operation, with its white beam visible for 26 nautical miles (48km), flashing twice every 10 seconds.
There is an accessible section of the Cape to Cape Track that runs between the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse and Sugarloaf Rock. This is a world-class trail that provides an exceptional experience. It incorporates more than 1km of timber boardwalk. Seats are provided along the trail. Access this track at easy drop off points in parking areas at either the northern end by the lighthouse or at Sugarloaf Rock. It is suitable for wheelchairs and is graded 1:12.
