Hike overview
Caloma Trig Lookout sits on one of the highest points in the Wanda Wandong section of Goobang National Park in New South Wales. Despite its elevated position, it is accessed by a very short and easy walk, making it suitable for almost anyone. The return distance is around 150 metres on a grade 1 track, and most visitors will complete it in about 15 minutes at a relaxed pace. It is an ideal stop if you are travelling through the region or looking for a simple outing with rewarding views.
From the carpark, a brief 50 metre stroll brings you to the lookout platform, where the landscape opens out to the west across the rolling bushland of Goobang National Park and beyond. On a clear day, the patchwork of forest and farmland stretches far into the distance. It is a great day trip option from Parkes, Dubbo or Peak Hill, especially if you are combining it with other walks or scenic drives through the park. The elevated position makes it a comfortable place to pause, take in the surroundings and gain a sense of the scale of this part of central New South Wales.
The approach to the lookout is lined with black cypress pines, grevilleas, lomandras and low heath, offering a snapshot of the park’s dry woodland environment. Tall grass trees stand among the shrubs, some thought to be hundreds of years old, quietly marking the passage of time in this landscape. Keep an eye on the sky while you are here, as birds of prey are often seen riding the thermals. Wedge tailed eagles, brown goshawks and brown falcons are regular visitors, adding another layer of interest to what might otherwise seem like a simple roadside stop. Even though the walk is short, it offers a genuine connection to the character and ecology of Goobang National Park.
