Hike overview
The Calamunnda Trail to Hewett's Hill is a delightful 5-kilometre walk through Beelu National Park, situated around 40 kilometres east of Perth. This family-friendly hike is a section of the well-known Bibbulmun Track, offering an easy-to-follow path that winds through a beautiful mix of tuart and jarrah trees, along with native balga and zamia. As you make your way along the trail, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to observe the park’s vibrant birdlife, and with a bit of luck, you may spot kangaroos and other native wildlife.
The trail gently descends towards Hewett’s Hut campsite, a tranquil spot where you can rest before making your way back. The campsite is equipped with a three-sided timber shelter, a long-drop toilet, picnic tables, and a rainwater tank, which usually has fresh water. After reaching the campsite, the return journey takes you uphill, following the same scenic route back through the forest.
To start the hike, head to the Calamunnda Trail Hub, located on Paull’s Valley Road in Hackett’s Gully, just a 15-minute drive from Kalamunda. Parking is available by gold coin donation. From the parking area, follow the trail markers, which are marked with the yellow triangle featuring the stylised dreamtime serpent, the Waugal. The trail is clearly signed in both directions, making it easy to navigate. From August to November, the park bursts with wildflowers, including beautiful orchids, adding even more charm to this already picturesque walk.

In spring, bursts of colour from native wildflowers brighten the trails, creating a spectacular backdrop for your journey. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way—western grey kangaroos, echidnas, and red-tailed black cockatoos are just some of the creatures you might encounter.
Mundaring Weir, one of the park’s most iconic landmarks, offers impressive views and a fascinating glimpse into Western Australia’s water supply history. Several lookouts provide sweeping panoramas over the dam and surrounding forest, making them great spots to pause and take in the scenery. If you’re keen to extend your visit, the Perth Hills Discovery Centre offers camping facilities and picnic areas, perfect for families and groups looking to immerse themselves in nature.
