Unveiling the beauty of Barrington Tops National Park, the Blue Gum Loop Trail offers a delightful 3.5-kilometer circuit ideal for walkers of moderate fitness. This picturesque loop, conveniently located near Dungog, takes roughly 1.5 hours to complete and is a perfect way to immerse yourself in the park's natural wonders.
The journey begins at the Williams River picnic area, where you can soak in the scenic surrounds before heading out on the trail. The path winds its way alongside the magnificent Williams River, leading you past cascading waterfalls and towering eucalypts. Lush pockets of rainforest teeming with plant life add to the charm of this riverside walk. As you cross the impressive high steel span bridge, take a moment to admire the captivating views of the river below.
Continuing along the track, you'll encounter vibrant young Sydney blue gums, remnants of past logging activities subtly woven into the landscape. A short detour beckons you towards the enchanting Fern Creek cascades, a perfect spot to spread out a picnic blanket and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings.
Upon recrossing the river, the trail delves into a captivating pocket of ancient rainforest. Keep your eyes peeled for bird's nest ferns and vibrant orchids nestled amongst the moss-covered branches. As you near the trail's conclusion, towering Sydney blue gums dominate the landscape. Several short detours lead to secluded havens along the river, including the inviting Crystal Pools, perfect for a refreshing dip to conclude your exploration.
Track grade
Grade 3 (Moderate) - Walks for Most Fitness Levels: Grade 3 on the AWTGS represents moderate walking tracks. These are ideal for walkers with some fitness who are comfortable with some hills and uneven terrain. While suitable for most ages, some bushwalking experience is recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Tracks may have short, steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps. The total distance of a Grade 3 walk can be up to 20 kilometers.

- Water safety: Strong currents can be present along the Williams River. Exercise caution while swimming and closely supervise children at all times.

Getting to the trailhead: Barrington Tops National Park.
Accessing the Blue Gum Loop Trail is straightforward and caters to most vehicles. Situated within the Williams River precinct of Barrington Tops National Park, the trailhead is conveniently located at the Williams River picnic area.
If you’re travelling from Dungog, head towards Chichester Dam Road and follow it for roughly 10 kilometers. Keep an eye out for the left turn onto Salisbury Road. Continue along this road for approximately 30 kilometers, following signs that will direct you towards the picnic area. Ample parking, including a designated disabled spot, is available right at the picnic area, allowing you to conveniently begin your exploration of this scenic riverside loop trail.
