The Aireys Inlet Circuit is a scenic 20 km grade 3 hike near Surf Coast, Victoria, offering a diverse experience of coastal beauty and inland nature. Starting and ending at the Distillery Creek Picnic Area off Bambra Road, the trail introduces hikers to the natural attractions around Aireys Inlet, including Fairhaven Beach and Painkalac Reservoir. The route combines coastal stretches, forest, and heathland, providing a nice contrast to the inland landscape of the Great Otways National Park. The hike typically takes about 6 hours to complete.
Located near the iconic Great Ocean Road, this enjoyable loop features a mix of environments—bushland, gravel roads, 4WD tracks, beach walking, and a few moderate hills. While much of the trail is relatively flat and straightforward, there are some steeper sections and loose rocks, requiring careful footing in places. However, some portions of the hike, particularly the first 10 km and last 5 km, follow dirt roads, which some hikers have found less engaging.
The highlight for many is the coastal section near the Aireys Inlet lighthouse, which offers stunning views and a more dynamic walking experience. While the inland forest sections provide opportunities to spot wildlife, such as birds, the road-heavy portions of the trail have detracted from some hikers' overall enjoyment.
It is important to note that there has been a recent report indicating that the turnoff from Gentle Annie Track leads into private property, so a slight detour may be necessary if access is restricted.
