Safety on the trail often gets associated with carrying more. An extra layer goes in case conditions change. A backup item goes in case something fails. A bit of extra gear goes in to cover whatever might come up. Each decision feels cautious and responsible on its own, meant to increase safety by increasing how prepared you are. At the trailhead, that usually feels justified: the pack holds options, and if something changes, the sense is that whatever’s needed is already there. The shift starts when those additions stop being weighed against what they actually cost elsewhere.
Redundancy and overpacking get treated as the same thing, since both mean carrying more than the bare minimum. The real difference isn’t in how much gear, it’s in what that gear is actually doing for you. Redundancy is deliberate: it backs up something critical, where failure would have real consequences. Overpacking is cumulative: it adds weight without necessarily making anything meaningfully more capable.
At the point of packing, that distinction isn’t always obvious. Every item has a justification. A second insulating layer in case it gets colder. Extra food beyond what’s actually planned for. A couple of tools that do roughly the same job. None of these look unreasonable in isolation. What’s harder to see is how they add up. As weight increases, the cost of carrying it starts affecting everything else: movement gets more demanding, fatigue arrives sooner, balance gets harder to hold on uneven ground, and the effort needed to maintain pace climbs. None of this happens dramatically. It happens gradually enough that it rarely triggers any real concern, even as the day itself starts performing differently under that extra weight.
Picture a full-day hike over mixed terrain, where a hiker sets out carrying extra gear to cover a wide range of contingencies. The pack feels a bit heavier than planned but still manageable, and early progress feels fine, with the extra weight not seeming to matter much yet. As the day goes on, it becomes harder to ignore.
Climbs take more effort, descents put more strain on the joints, breaks stretch longer, recovery between efforts takes more time. The original intention behind all that extra gear, more safety, is still technically true, the equipment’s there if it’s needed. What’s actually changed is the condition of the person who’d need to use it well.
This is where the interaction between load, fatigue and decision-making really starts to matter. Fatigue reduces cognitive capacity, and attention narrows toward the immediate physical task rather than the bigger picture, changing weather, terrain complexity, how much daylight’s left, all of which becomes harder to track. At the same time, having extra gear along can distort perception in its own way. There’s a sense of being well prepared, of having options, of every contingency covered, and that sense can quietly reduce how necessary reassessment feels as conditions actually shift. It feels robust. In practice, it might just be carrying more than it can efficiently manage.
Redundancy behaves differently from this. Applied deliberately, it strengthens something specific without creating disproportionate cost everywhere else. A backup navigation method means position can still be confirmed if the primary device fails. An extra insulation layer supports staying warm if conditions genuinely deteriorate. These are targeted additions, supporting exactly the functions that matter most when things start to change.
Overpacking spreads weight across a lot of items without any real prioritisation behind it. It raises the total load without necessarily improving the ability to respond to any specific failure. Extra weight increases fatigue, fatigue reduces awareness and decision quality, and reduced decision quality changes how and when equipment actually gets used, sometimes meaning gear that was meant to increase safety doesn’t get accessed or applied well when it’s actually needed. The whole thing gets less efficient exactly at the point it’s under real strain.
Safety margin often gets equated with carrying more rather than carrying well. Extra gear creates a genuine feeling of preparedness, even in cases where the cost of carrying it is quietly working against the ability to actually respond when something happens. None of this means redundancy isn’t necessary, in plenty of situations it genuinely is.
What matters is where it’s applied and how it interacts with everything else being carried. The real question was never how much equipment came along. It’s whether that equipment actually improves the ability to manage uncertainty without adding strain that outweighs the benefit.
Redundancy strengthens something specific. Overpacking just adds weight across the board. The difference is where the margin actually gets gained, and where it quietly gets spent instead.

Darren Edwards totally depends on the hike! Am i on Hinchinbrook, walking maybe 4 hours a day, with lots of lazing around time? Chair! Am I hiking the OT, with full days off walking and access to cabins at the end of each day? No way.
