Why I built the Hiking Safety Systems Framework

When people get into trouble on hikes, it’s rarely because of one dramatic mistake. More often it’s a chain of small shifts building over time, a late start, a weather change, a navigation error, fatigue, a rushed decision, each manageable on its own and not manageable together.

Over time, I noticed that most hiking advice focuses on isolated pieces: carry more water, check the weather, tell someone your plans, wear proper footwear. All genuinely good advice, and rarely connected to each other. What was missing was a way to understand how pressure actually builds across a hike as a whole.

Hiking safety usually gets presented as a checklist, individual actions, individual precautions treated as if they don’t touch each other. In reality, they influence one another constantly. Poor hydration affects judgement. Fatigue reduces navigation accuracy.

Navigation delays increase exposure. Increased exposure accelerates fatigue further. What was missing was a way to see hiking as one integrated system rather than a collection of separate, unrelated tasks.

The Australian Walking Track Grading System is a genuinely useful tool, but it describes the track, not the person walking it. A Grade 2 walk in extreme heat can strain a hiker’s hydration and environmental protection just as much as a harder walk in mild conditions, because the grade never changes while the person responding to it does.

The shift in thinking was simple. Instead of asking “is the track hard?”, the more useful question became “which systems will actually be under strain in these conditions, with this group, at this time?” Through years of observation, incident analysis and field experience across varied Australian environments, eight core systems consistently kept emerging: navigation and positioning, environmental protection, hydration and fuel, injury and medical response, communication and rescue, load carrying and mobility, equipment reliability, and decision-making and judgement.

Every hiking outcome comes out of how these interact. When they’re all functioning well together, a hike feels controlled and manageable. When one weakens, the others tend to compensate for a while. When several degrade at the same time, small issues start compounding into something real.

Australian conditions tend to amplify how these systems interact with each other. Heat accelerates dehydration and cognitive fatigue together rather than separately. Alpine weather shifts raise both exposure and navigation demand at once. Remote terrain extends how long a rescue actually takes.

Unformed pads place more load on mobility than formed tracks do. Coastal terrain adds wind and tide on top of everything else. The framework needed to reflect these realities specifically, built to anticipate where a system will start to degrade before that pressure compounds, proactively rather than reactively.

One of the more persistent misconceptions in hiking culture is that safety improves simply by carrying more gear. Gear does matter, but it only works when the system around it is actually functioning. A PLB doesn’t compensate for poor navigation. Extra water doesn’t correct a turnaround decision that was made too late.

A first aid kit doesn’t prevent a fatigue-related fall from happening in the first place. The goal was never to carry more. It’s to understand how everything being carried actually interacts with everything else going on.

Most serious incidents don’t begin with dramatic terrain. They begin with subtle shifts, a navigation shortcut, a delayed turnaround, an underestimated forecast, an overloaded pack, a decision made while genuinely fatigued. These are predictable stressors on predictable systems, and the framework isn’t meant to increase fear about them. It’s meant to increase clarity, shifting the question from “how hard is the track?” to “how resilient are my own systems today?”

The Hiking Safety Systems Framework formalises the actual philosophy behind that work, built from years of field observation, incident pattern analysis, and refinement across genuinely varied Australian conditions.

Safe hiking was never really about avoiding difficulty. It’s about managing how everything interacts, route, weather, terrain, group dynamics, judgement, all influencing each other continuously. That shift looks small written down. On the trail, it changes how decisions actually get made.
