Hike overview
Standing 97 metres above sea level, The Bluff (also known as Rosetta Head) is a prominent headland located 4 kilometres southwest of Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. Accessible by a one-way loop road for walkers and cyclists, The Bluff offers a rewarding experience for those willing to tackle the 800-metre Rosetta Circuit hike. This moderate difficulty trail, suitable for most walkers and taking roughly 40 minutes to complete, rewards hikers with breathtaking 360-degree views.
From the summit, witness the dramatic southern coastline stretching to the southwest, Granite Island standing tall to the east, and even whales migrating through the waters from June to October. The carpark provides a convenient starting point for the 600-metre loop walk leading to the summit.
The Bluff holds significance beyond its scenic beauty. Indigenous Australians, the Ramindjeri people, named the area Longkuwar and thrived here due to the abundant marine life, including whales. In the 19th century, whalers set up one of two stations on Encounter Bay at this very location, operating from 1837 to the 1860s. Interestingly, The Bluff also boasts a mining history. Copper and gold were discovered here, leading to the establishment of the Coolanine Mine in 1863. Though the mine closed shortly after, it reopened in 1882 upon the discovery of lead, silver, and tin oxide.
Geologically, The Bluff's formation is a fascinating story. Over 500 million years ago, a combination of glaciation, volcanic activity intruding granite (resulting in the Encounter Bay granite), rising sea levels, and a mountain-building event shaped this impressive headland.
