Granite Slopes and Bay Views on the Mornington Peninsula
Overview
Arthurs Seat State Park rises above Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula, about 60 kilometres from Melbourne, and wraps around the western and northern escarpments of the hill. It is a relatively compact park, but it feels bigger once you are in the bush, with steep country, wet gullies and a strong sense of elevation that is unusual this close to the bay.
The park protects a prominent natural feature rather than a broad spread of country. Arthurs Seat is the highest point on the Mornington Peninsula, and its slopes hold important remnants of native vegetation in a part of Victoria that has long been shaped by farming, townships and coastal development.
Highlights
The defining feature here is the ridge itself, formed from Devonian granite and rising sharply above Port Phillip. From the summit and the higher slopes, the outlook stretches across the bay, the peninsula and, on clear days, all the way to the Melbourne skyline and distant ranges. That contrast between enclosed bushland and wide, elevated views gives the park its character.
Elsewhere, the scenery shifts from exposed rocky country to gentler gardened areas around Seawinds and then back into more natural bushland blocks. Seamist Drive and the upper parts of the ridge are especially memorable for the way they look out over the southern peninsula.
Best Time to Visit
Spring is a particularly good time to be here, when trees and shrubs in Seawinds Gardens begin flowering from late August and the bushland feels fresh after winter. Autumn also suits the park well, especially around the gardens where deciduous trees bring a different colour palette to a landscape better known for native forest and coastal views.
Because the park sits high above the surrounding peninsula, it can also be rewarding in the cooler months, when clearer air often sharpens the long views across Port Phillip and inland toward Melbourne.
Plants and Animals
Arthurs Seat State Park is valuable as a remnant of native habitat on the peninsula. Across the broader park system here, vegetation communities include coastal grassy forest, coast banksia woodland, sand heathland, coastal heathland, foothill forest, heathy woodland, riparian forest and swampy vegetation, with several of these communities now much reduced since European settlement.
The park’s woodlands, forests and wetter gullies provide habitat for a regionally important mix of wildlife. Significant species recorded here include the Southern Brown Bandicoot, koala, Tree Goanna, Southern Emu-wren and Wedge-tailed Eagle, and the area is also important for birdlife more generally.
