Trail summary
Hike overview
The Mount Feathertop - Diamantina Spur track is a challenging hike that starts from the Kiewa River West Branch and climbs steadily for about 4 kilometres. The track joins the South Razorback track roughly 3 kilometres from the summit of Mount Feathertop. This route offers stunning views of Mount Feathertop but is a strenuous climb, particularly in the first section where the gradient is steep, and some rock scrambling is required over loose shale. It's often considered the most difficult ascent in the Victorian Alps, as it gains nearly 800 metres in elevation over its 4.5-kilometre length.
As you ascend, you'll find the terrain demanding, but as you break out of the tree line, the views of Mount Feathertop’s south face make the effort worthwhile. The gradient eases slightly at this point, but the track remains challenging. Once you reach the South Razorback, you'll follow a well-formed trail for another 8 kilometres over undulating ground to complete the circuit. While the summit provides incredible views, it's important to note that there’s no water available along the Diamantina Spur, and the only suitable campsite is near the top. A small group could also camp near the bottom, next to the bridge over the Diamantina River, though this is less common.
Mount Feathertop, standing at 1,922 metres, is the second-highest peak in Victoria and is part of the Australian Alps in the Alpine National Park. Its steep summit slopes set it apart from many other Victorian mountains, which typically have rounded summit domes. The mountain is often snow-covered between June and September, adding an extra challenge for hikers. For the most accurate mapping, the Mount Feathertop - Hotham 1:30,000 map (2nd edition, Rooftop, 2009) is the recommended resource.
