Hike overview
Leadbeaters’ Walk is a short 600 m, grade 2 walk in Yarra Ranges National Park, Victoria, and takes around 30 minutes to complete at a relaxed pace. The walk begins at the south east corner of the Lake Mountain Village car park, making it an easy option to fit in before or after exploring other trails in the area.
Despite its short length, this walk offers a thoughtful look into the changing story of the Lake Mountain plateau. Interpretative signs along the track explain how the landscape has been shaped by major fire events in 1939 and 2009, helping you understand what you are seeing around you rather than simply passing through it.
As you walk, you will notice mature Alpine Ash trees that regenerated after the 1939 fires, alongside younger saplings that have grown since 2009. Remnants of past timber logging are also visible, providing a tangible link to the area’s history and how people once interacted with this environment. It is a gentle, informative walk that encourages reflection and offers a deeper appreciation of the resilience and ongoing recovery of this alpine landscape.
Track grade
Grade 2 (Easy) -Â A Gentle Introduction to Inclines: Grade 2 on the AWTGS represents easy walking tracks that offer a slightly more challenging experience compared to Grade 1. Similar to Grade 1, no prior bushwalking experience is required. The track surface is typically hardened or compacted and may have gentle hill sections or occasional steps. The total distance of a Grade 2 walk is typically no greater than 10 kilometers. These walks are still suitable for families with a bit more experience or those seeking a gentle introduction to some inclines.

Getting there
Getting to the trailhead: Lake Mountain Alpine Resort.
Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is located around 120 kilometres north east of Melbourne and is easily reached by road in approximately two hours. The most common approach is via the Maroondah Highway through Healesville and Marysville, followed by a well signposted alpine road that climbs steadily to the resort. The sealed access road is suitable for conventional vehicles and remains open year round, although winter conditions may require snow chains to be carried or fitted when directed. Mobile reception can be unreliable closer to the summit, so it is a good idea to download maps or directions before leaving Marysville. This walk leaves from the south east corner of the Lake Mountain Village Car Park.

About the region
Lake Mountain Alpine Resort is one of Victoria’s officially designated alpine resorts, located around two hours from Melbourne and managed by Alpine Resorts Victoria. While best known for its winter snow season, Lake Mountain is a year round destination with easy access and a wide range of outdoor experiences.
Set within Yarra Ranges National Park, the area is characterised by Snow Gum woodland, tall Mountain Ash forests, and open alpine plateaus. In winter, Lake Mountain is a popular spot for snow play and cross country skiing, while the warmer months reveal walking tracks, lookouts, and seasonal wildflowers from late spring through summer.
The surrounding Yarra Ranges extend across a broad landscape between Melbourne and the Victorian Alps, with towns such as Marysville and Healesville acting as gateways to the park. Scenic drives, short walks, and forest trails make the region an appealing destination throughout the year, whether visiting for snow, hiking, or a quieter day outdoors.
