Trail summary
Hike overview
The Fairy Dell Jeep Track Circuit explores a section of state forest near Bruthen. The circuit mostly follows gravel vehicle tracks and 4WD tracks and includes a short walk through the warm temperate rainforest of the Fairy Dell Flora Reserve. At 80ha in size, it protects an important area of and is a lovely spot to visit. The vegetation is dominated by Lily Pilly and forms a unique forest in combination with climbers, vines and ferns. As you enter the rainforest, you'll notice a marked drop in the temperature, particularly on a hot day. This moist microclimate of the rainforest helps prevent wildfires and conserves the diversity of unique plant species. The area has been impacted by recent bushfires in East Gippsland and much of the rainforest canopy has been removed. While the rainforest is recovering, it will take many years before the moist microclimate recovers.
Some sections of this hike are steep and unrelenting, particularly along the north-westerns side of the circuit. This is a pleasant walk with occasional views over the surrounding forests, mountains and valley.
