Safety advice
The walk begins at Lemonthyme Wilderness Retreat. Day visitors are welcome but must sign in and out at reception. As this is private property with various accommodation options, please be considerate. Note that the trail is no longer accessible from Cradle Mountain Road.
Hike overview
Champagne Falls is a captivating waterfall tucked away in the lush rainforest of Moina, near Cradle Valley. This charming 2.5-kilometre walk is rated as a grade 3 hike and typically takes around one hour to complete, making it an ideal short adventure for nature lovers. The falls are easily accessible from Lemonthyme Lodge Wilderness Retreat, which serves as the starting point. From the lodge, follow the signs along a 4WD track that leads steeply uphill. After about 25 minutes of walking, a more primitive bush trail directs you towards the falls, guiding you down into the gully and to the base of the waterfall. The falls themselves stand at around 15 metres high, with a tiered design and an abundance of moss covering the main vertical wall and large rocks at the bottom, adding to the falls’ enchanting beauty.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can extend your walk by following the trail upstream to Bridal Veil Falls, which connects with the 4WD track to create a pleasant circuit. Many hikers choose to visit both waterfalls in one trip, as Bridal Veil Falls is considered the more impressive of the two. It’s a recommended combination if time allows, with the complete loop taking around 3.5 hours to complete.
The walk to Champagne Falls is both scenic and informative, offering insights into the surrounding environment of Lemonthyme Wilderness Retreat. As you walk, keep an eye out for the towering myrtle trees, graceful Mother Shield ferns, and vibrant mosses that characterise this rainforest setting. The track branches off from the main 4WD route and begins at the turnoff sign for Bridal Veil via Champagne Falls, leading you deeper into the enchanting forest. The terrain can be steep in places, and the track can be slippery, especially in wet conditions, so it’s best suited for walkers with a moderate level of fitness. For added safety, hiking boots are recommended, as well as raincoats and warm clothing, as the weather can change quickly in this part of Tasmania.
Historically, Champagne Falls was known as Rowlands Falls, a name that can still be found in old photographs in the Libraries Tasmania collection. While the waterfall is undoubtedly a highlight, the surrounding myrtle forest and cascading streams make the entire walk a truly immersive experience. Whether you choose to visit Champagne Falls on its own or pair it with a trip to Bridal Veil Falls, this walk offers a refreshing escape into one of Tasmania’s most beautiful and peaceful environments.
