Hike overview
The Anbangbang Billabong Walk offers a tranquil escape through Kakadu National Park's stunning scenery. This easy 3.9-kilometre loop trail (when commencing at Nawurlandja Parking Area) takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete and winds its way around the picturesque Anbangbang Billabong.
The walk provides a delightful immersion into the diverse flora of Kakadu. Towering paperbark forests and sprawling savanna woodlands frame the billabong, teeming with birdlife. Keen birdwatchers will be enthralled by the opportunity to spot magpie geese, green pygmy geese, egrets, comb-crested jacanas, cormorants, corellas, and even the majestic red-tailed black cockatoo.
A particularly interesting aspect of the walk is its accessibility. Part of the trail, including the path leading to the picnic area, is wheelchair-friendly. The nearby Nawurlandja Lookout Walk is another worthwhile addition to your Kakadu itinerary, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
For those seeking a closer look at the billabong's rich ecosystem, consider bringing binoculars or a camera. Early mornings and evenings are prime times to observe agile wallabies emerging from the woodlands to graze near the water's edge beneath the paperbark trees.
