NITECORE HC65 UHE – Field Test Review
A dependable headlamp is one of the most important pieces of safety gear you can carry on the trail. Whether you are walking out later than planned, starting early to beat the heat, or simply rummaging through your pack in fading light, having reliable hands-free illumination is essential. A good headlamp also allows you to walk safely after dark, manage emergencies, set up camp, and carry out close-up tasks without juggling a torch.
For those of us who spend time in the Australian bush, a headlamp needs to be tough, efficient, comfortable and capable of delivering both powerful long-distance beams and softer light for camp use. The NITECORE HC65 UHE promises all of this, so I was keen to put it through a proper field test.

The Field Test
I was provided with the NITECORE HC65 UHE and spent a few weeks testing it across a range of day hikes and low-light conditions. I used it for early morning starts, late finishes, camp chores and night navigation to get a thorough sense of its performance in real-world conditions. What follows is my honest assessment based entirely on field use.

Review: NITECORE HC65 UHE
Build Quality and Comfort
The HC65 UHE immediately feels like a premium piece of kit. Unlike many plastic headlamps, this one is constructed from metal, giving it a sturdy and reassuring feel. It is rated IP68 for water resistance and is impact tested to two metres, which suits the rigours of Australian bushwalking where gear often gets knocked around.
The machining and finish look excellent, and the included headband and over-the-head strap were very comfortable during longer periods of wear. I also appreciated the inclusion of a hard protective case, which makes transporting the unit simple and secure.

Lighting Performance and Versatility
This is a seriously capable headlamp. With a maximum output of 2,000 lumens from its 8-core UHE LED array, the main beam offers impressive reach and brightness for fast night navigation.
Where this model stands out is its triple-output lighting system:
- Main Cool White Beam
The high-powered beam is ideal for navigation, scanning terrain and fast-paced trail movement after dark. - Auxiliary High-CRI Warm Beam
The warm, high-CRI output is excellent for close-up tasks such as reading maps, cooking at camp or sorting gear. Colours look natural and there is no harsh glare. - Red Auxiliary Light
Ideal for preserving night vision and moving quietly around camp without disturbing others.
In practice, I found this combination extremely useful. Switching between bright long-range light and softer task lighting meant I could adapt to whatever the trail or camp required.

Battery and Runtime
The HC65 UHE uses a removable 18650 lithium-ion battery (4000 mAh). Being able to swap batteries on longer trips is a major advantage, especially for off-grid use where recharging opportunities are limited.
Runtime is one of this headlamp’s strongest points. The manufacturer claims up to 82 hours on the lowest mode, and in my testing the performance was excellent. On the 1,300-lumen mode, I recorded usable output for more than six and a half hours, outperforming the five-hour specification.
Charging is simple via USB-C, and the built-in battery indicator is practical when planning multi-day use.
Battery Upgrade Options: The kit included a note highlighting NITECORE’s optional high-capacity “Carbon Battery” range (6K and 12K models). These higher-capacity button-top cells can extend runtime significantly for long trips or remote use. The standard NL1840HP performed well in my testing, but it is worth knowing that upgrade options exist if you need longer periods between charges.

Things to Be Aware Of
User Interface (Awareness rather than a flaw): The control system uses hold-for-on, hold-for-off and double-click inputs. I didn’t find this difficult to learn, but it is worth noting for users who prefer single-click interfaces or simpler controls.
Brightness Step-Downs (Expected behaviour): The Turbo and 1,300-lumen modes step down quickly to more sustainable output. This is normal for high-output LEDs and not a fault, but users should understand these modes are intended for short bursts.
Auxiliary Light Brightness: The warm high-CRI auxiliary beam is great for close-up work and colour accuracy, though at around 35 lumens it may feel a little dim for some camp tasks. A slightly brighter option would increase versatility.
Beam and Tint: There can be a slight greenish tint on the main beam and minor artefacts on the auxiliary light. These did not affect my experience on the trail, but enthusiasts sensitive to beam patterns may notice them.
Battery Compatibility: The HC65 UHE uses button-top 18650 lithium-ion batteries, such as the included NL1840HP. Flat-top cells generally do not make proper contact. This is worth noting if you rely on carrying standardised spares.
Personal Preference – Battery Type: While the rechargeable 18650 system offers excellent runtime and performance, I personally prefer headlamps that accept common AAA or AA batteries, as they are inexpensive, widely available and easy to replace on longer trips. This is not a flaw in the HC65 UHE, but hikers with similar preferences may want to factor this into their decision.

Final Thoughts
The NITECORE HC65 UHE is an excellent high-performance headlamp designed for serious outdoor use. It is rugged, bright, efficient and offers impressive runtime. The removable battery system and triple-output versatility make it ideal for backpacking, emergency preparedness and night navigation.
The main drawbacks are the complex user interface and the rapid step-down on the brightest modes. If you are willing to learn the controls and understand the limitations of high-lumen operation, this is a very capable, durable and reliable headlamp that I can confidently recommend.
