When your adventures take you beyond the reach of mobile service, satellite communicators let family and friends know you’re ok or send emergency responders your GPS location, all at the push of a button. Add these pocket-sized devices to your essential gear and stay connected wherever you roam. The best satellite communicators give adventure seekers the ability to stay on track, stay in touch, and—if worse comes to worst—summon an emergency response team.
In recent years, satellite communicators have become a popular addition to peoples packs. There is no shortage of choice but rather than cover them all, I am going to compare a handful of the leading satellite communicators on the market, in no particular order. But first, let’s take a look at what satellite communicators are and how they work.
Choosing the Right Satellite Communicator
What Is a Satellite Communicator?
A satellite communicator is a device that allows users to send messages and request emergency assistance in areas without mobile reception. These devices connect to satellite networks, ensuring communication remains possible even in the most remote locations.
Satellite communicators generally fall into two categories: one-way and two-way messaging devices.
One-Way Communication
These devices can send outgoing messages or SOS alerts but do not receive responses. They are ideal for hikers, solo adventurers, and those who only need to send check-ins or emergency alerts without expecting a reply.
One-way communicators are often more affordable than two-way options, making them a practical choice for casual outdoor enthusiasts.
Two-Way Communication
Two-way devices allow users to send and receive messages, which can be invaluable in emergencies where real-time updates are needed. They provide a greater level of security, particularly for group expeditions, research teams, and professionals working in remote locations. Some models also offer GPS navigation features, waypoint marking, and TracBack functionality.
Why Choose a Satellite Communicator?
Satellite communicators offer a reliable alternative to personal locator beacons (PLBs) and satellite phones. While PLBs are excellent for distress signals, communicators often include additional features like check-ins, custom messaging, and weather updates.
Compared to satellite phones, communicators tend to be smaller, more affordable, and easier to use. They allow adventurers to stay connected without the high costs of satellite calls or internet access.
For those exploring remote landscapes, a satellite communicator provides peace of mind while still preserving the sense of adventure. It enables you to share updates with loved ones, coordinate with a group, and, most importantly, access emergency help if needed.
How SOS and Emergency Messaging Works
When the SOS function is activated, the device sends an emergency signal, along with the user’s GPS location, to a designated response centre or emergency services. Some devices also allow users to communicate directly with rescuers via two-way messaging, providing vital situational details.
Most communicators allow users to assign emergency contacts who will receive alerts in addition to authorities. The frequency of location updates varies by device, ranging from every few minutes to longer intervals.
In dynamic situations—such as needing to move from the original SOS location—two-way communication can be particularly useful for updating responders and improving rescue outcomes.
Types of Satellite Communicators
Satellite communicators generally fall into two categories based on how they function with mobile apps:
- Requires an App – These devices need to be paired with a smartphone for full functionality. While basic features like check-ins may work independently, most capabilities (e.g., custom messaging, weather updates) are accessed via a connected phone.
- Has an App – These devices can function on their own but also offer a companion app for added convenience. With built-in screens or keypads, they allow users to send messages, check the weather, and even navigate without needing a paired phone.
Subscription Plans: Annual vs Flexible
All satellite communicators require a subscription, with pricing based on factors such as message limits, tracking frequency, and additional features. Some plans require monthly commitments, activation fees, or suspension fees, so it’s worth considering whether you need a year-round service or a more flexible option for occasional trips.
Satellite Networks: Iridium vs. Globalstar
Two major satellite networks power most satellite communicators:
- Iridium – Provides 100% global coverage via a network of 66 low-earth orbit satellites. While it ensures worldwide connectivity, signal strength may fluctuate as satellites pass overhead.
- Globalstar – Covers around 80-90% of land areas using 32 second-generation satellites. While it does not provide complete global coverage, it is highly effective in North America, Europe, and Australia.
For those venturing into polar regions or needing coverage in open seas, Iridium is often the preferred choice. For users primarily staying within Globalstar’s strong coverage zones, it can be a more cost-effective option.
Now that we’ve covered the basics of satellite communicators and how they work, let’s take a closer look at some of the leading options on the market.

Which satellite communicator is right for you?
Choosing a satellite communicator can be a daunting task. New devices are added and upgraded at a pace that makes it difficult to decide, especially if you are an early-adopter like me. I’ve spoken with a lot of other adventurers including mountain bike riders, hikers, bushwalkers, and trail runners. At this very point in time, the general consensus seems to be the inReach Mini 2. A lot of it comes down to personal choice, the features you want, the features you actually need, and your budget. From the sounds I hear in the great outdoors, if you want the best of the best, the inReach Mini 2 is the way to go right now. But who knows what new device might be just around the corner.
