Hike overview
Warren Gorge Circuit is a 5.2 kilometre, grade 3 hike in Warren Conservation Park in South Australia. Allow around two hours to complete the loop, although many walkers take a little longer to pause at the lookouts and enjoy the quiet character of the gorge.
The walk begins near the camping area, just beyond the toilets, where a trailhead sign marks the start of the circuit. From here the track follows the floor of Warren Gorge, gradually drawing you between steep rock walls that rise sharply on either side. Native pine trees line sections of the gorge, creating pockets of shade and giving this part of the walk a calm, sheltered feel. The trail is easy to follow, with round white tin can lids fixed to trees marking the route as it winds deeper into the valley.
After passing through the gorge, the track begins a steady climb towards the saddle. As the landscape opens out, the vegetation shifts to include stands of yackas and low scrub typical of the northern Flinders Ranges. Reaching the ridgeline brings a change of perspective, with several informal lookouts along the crest offering wide views across the surrounding country.
It is worth taking the short side tracks that lead to these viewpoints. Smoke-Oh Lookout, which is not marked with a named sign, provides a particularly good vantage point, while the area known as Lookout Rocks offers another excellent place to pause and take in the landscape before continuing along the ridge.
The return section follows the ridgeline before descending back towards the gorge and the camping area, completing the circuit. Although relatively short, the combination of shaded gorge walking, open ridgeline views and interesting vegetation makes this a rewarding walk that offers a good introduction to the scenery of Warren Conservation Park.
Visitors to Warren Gorge are required to pay an entry or camping fee. Payment can be made at the self registration station located just off Arden Vale Road on Warren Gorge Access Road, or in Quorn at the Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre on Railway Terrace.
