Essential information
Tracks behind the waterfalls can be slippery, even when they appear dry. With sheer cliffs and waterfalls along the way, one slip could be fatal—serious injury or death may occur from walking near the edges. Stay on the marked track and supervise children closely at all times.
Hike overview
The Twin Falls Circuit, a 4km grade 3 hike in Springbrook National Park, offers an immersive experience in one of Queensland's most remarkable natural settings. Typically completed in around two hours, this track can be accessed from either the Tallanbana Picnic Area or Canyon Lookout. Following the path in an anti-clockwise direction is recommended, as it allows walkers to fully appreciate the interpretive signs that highlight the diverse forest types encountered along the way.
As you wind your way through this enchanting landscape, you’ll pass behind two waterfalls, traverse narrow rock clefts, and meander among towering palms and delicate tree ferns. Keep an eye out for the distinctive brush box trees, with their smooth, pink bark. These trees, known as Lophostemon confertus, are a highlight of the circuit, some of which have been radiocarbon-dated to an incredible 1,500 years. This makes them the oldest trees ever dated on mainland Australia—a living connection to the ancient Gondwana forests.
Be cautious near the waterfalls, as the spray can make the rocks slippery, even on dry days. The area is home to sheer cliffs, so it’s vital to stay on the marked tracks and supervise children closely at all times. Despite these hazards, the rewards of the Twin Falls Circuit are well worth the care. Along the way, you’ll be treated to sweeping mountain views and plenty of opportunities for stunning photographs, particularly near the waterfalls and beneath the forest canopy.
This walk is an opportunity to connect with an ancient and pristine environment, but it’s also a responsibility. Stick to the paths, respect the fragile ecosystem, and allow enough time to complete the circuit safely before dusk. Whether you’re drawn by the promise of cascading water or the chance to stand among some of the oldest living trees in Australia, the Twin Falls Circuit is a journey into the heart of nature’s resilience and beauty.
