Spectacles Aboriginal Heritage Trail is a 5km, grade 2 hike located in the Beeliar Regional Park, Western Australia. The hike should take around 1.75 hrs to complete.
Hike overview
The Aboriginal Heritage Trail is a five kilometre loop walk around the northernmost wetland of the Spectacles, within the Beeliar Regional Park and located in the City of Kwinana. Interpretation panels along the trail explain the animals, flora and lifestyle of the original Aboriginal inhabitants. There is also a Bird hide and two side paths through paperbarks.
The Beeliar Regional Park consists of two chains of wetlands comprised of 26 lakes and numerous wetlands stretching 25km along the coast and covering an area of approximately 3400 hectares. The Spectacles are a wetland in the eastern chain comprised of two lake bodies. The area comprises a wetland reserve surrounded by banksia and melaleuca woodland. The wetlands were important camping, ceremonial areas and sources of food for Aboriginal people. The Medina Aboriginal Cultural Group has installed interpretation panels around the trail to share the Aboriginal heritage of the area. There is also a Bird hide located in the wetlands. Part of this area was affected by a bushfire in the summer of 2014/2015, in particular the paperbarks along the "Paperbark View" trail. However the Birds are prolific with wrens
