Hike Overview
This proposed trail offers a perfect balance for both experienced and leisurely riders. Seasoned cyclists can conquer it in a single day, while those seeking a more relaxed pace can savor a two-day adventure.
The charm of this trail lies not just in its distance, but in its picturesque location. The railway winds its way through a beautifully undulating countryside, promising a visually captivating journey. Don't worry about packing extra provisions – both Sandy Hollow and Merriwa, flanking the trail at either end, boast a welcoming selection of food and accommodation options.
History buffs will be delighted by the ongoing efforts of the Merriwa Railway Society. They are dedicated to restoring the Merriwa station and yard, along with showcasing a collection of locomotives and rolling stock. Imagine stepping back in time as you explore these meticulously preserved pieces of railway history.
Positive strides have already been made towards this project. In 2014, the goods shed received a fresh coat of paint, and the station platform barge wall was replaced. The society also maintains the station precinct through regular mowing, brush cutting, and weed spraying.
The Sandy Hollow to Merriwa Rail Trail is a project brimming with potential, offering a delightful blend of scenic beauty, historical intrigue, and a relaxed pace. Stay tuned for future updates on this exciting development in the Hunter Valley.
