Discover the Walks of Royal National Park
Located near Cronulla, just an hour’s drive from both Sydney and Wollongong, Royal National Park is a vast and diverse natural escape spanning over 16,000 hectares. Established in 1879, it holds the distinction of being the world’s second-oldest national park and remains a favourite among walkers, hikers, and nature lovers. With an ever-changing landscape of rugged coastal cliffs, sheltered beaches, lush rainforest, and open heathland, the park provides a range of experiences, whether you’re after a short bushwalk, a multi-day hike, or a relaxing picnic by the river.
Known locally as “the Nasho” or simply “the Royal,” the park is home to an extensive network of trails that weave through its varied terrain. Walkers and hikers can explore everything from the scenic clifftop paths of the Coast Track to the peaceful bushland trails of the Hacking River Valley. Spring brings vibrant wildflower displays, particularly along the Curra Moors Loop and Wises tracks, while winter offers the chance to spot migrating whales from the headlands. The Coast Track from Bundeena to Otford, a challenging 26-kilometre hike, is a highlight for those wanting to take in breathtaking ocean views over one or two days.
Beyond its trails, the park is a playground for outdoor activities. Swimmers can cool off in freshwater pools like Karloo Pool and Deer Pool or head to one of the many beaches, including Wattamolla, Jibbon, and Little Marley. Surfers often seek out the waves at Garie Beach, while kayakers and paddleboarders enjoy the calmer waters near Audley. Wildlife is abundant, with sugar gliders, possums, and wallabies frequently spotted in the Hacking River Valley. Birdwatchers can look out for sulphur-crested cockatoos, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, and crimson rosellas, among the more than 300 recorded species.
Royal National Park is a place to explore in all seasons, each bringing its own appeal. The warm summer months are perfect for beach walks and coastal swims, while winter is an excellent time for longer hikes and whale watching. With picnic areas, barbecues, camping spots, and historic sites scattered throughout, it’s an ideal destination for a day trip or an extended stay.
