Hartz Mountains National Park Walks and Alpine Landscapes

Hartz Mountains National Park sits high above the southern Huon Valley and offers a striking mix of mountains, lakes and waterfalls shaped by ancient ice. Standing on the higher ridges, the views stretch across layered peaks towards Tasmania’s southern coast, giving a real sense of scale and remoteness. The park is located near Geeveston in southern Tasmania, around 55 kilometres south-west of Hobart, making it an easy day trip from the state capital.

The landscape here has been formed by glaciers that once covered the dolerite backbone of the range. As the ice retreated, it left behind small glacial lakes, cirques and steep drops where waterfalls now spill over rock faces. These features create a dramatic setting in every season. Winter often brings snow and icy conditions, while spring sees alpine plants and wildflowers appear, including the vivid red blooms of the Tasmanian waratah.

Hartz Mountains National Park is well known for its range of walks that suit different interests and abilities. Well-graded tracks wind through light forest, then climb into subalpine and alpine vegetation on the higher plains. Short bushwalks to Waratah Lookout, Arve Falls and Lake Osborne are gentle and can be completed in under an hour return, yet they still provide rewarding views and a clear sense of how ice has shaped the area over time.

For those looking for longer hikes, Lake Esperance and Hartz Peak offer more challenge and are both part of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks. These routes generally take between two and five hours return and require sturdy footwear, warm clothing and a close eye on the weather. In return, walkers are treated to expansive mountain outlooks and a deeper experience of the park’s rugged terrain.

Wildlife adds another layer of interest to any visit. Echidnas and platypus may be spotted during the day, while wallabies, pademelons and brushtail possums are more active around dusk. Several frog species live in the wetter areas, and birdlife is plentiful, with honeyeaters, eastern spinebills and green rosellas commonly seen or heard along the tracks.

Facilities within the park are simple but practical. Near the Waratah Lookout track there is water and a picnic shelter with tables, while the Hartz visitor shelter at the end of the road provides another protected spot to rest, along with water and picnic tables. Both the shelter and nearby toilets are designed for disabled access. A valid parks pass is required to enter Tasmania’s national parks, so it is worth organising this before you arrive.
