Wetland Country Along Scrubby Creek
Overview
Berrinba Wetlands is a large restored wetland landscape in Logan, south of Brisbane, centred on Scrubby Creek and its floodplain. About 80 hectares of the 120-hectare site are protected and rehabilitated, with waterways, bush regrowth and open wetland edges shaping the character of the area. What stands out here is that this is not an untouched remnant but a place carefully reworked to support habitat and waterway health while keeping a strong sense of space around the creek corridor.
Highlights
The scenery at Berrinba Wetlands comes from water, floodplain and scale. Tributaries run through the reserve, the old sand-mining landscape has left deep water bodies in places, and the broad Scrubby Creek corridor gives the whole area a low, open feel. A series of major bridges crosses the wetland system, including a long elevated span over the floodplain, which helps you appreciate the width of the creek flats and the patchwork of water, reeds and regrowth.
Best Time to Visit
Cooler months tend to suit Berrinba Wetlands best, when the open pathways and bridges are more comfortable through the middle of the day. This is also the kind of place that changes with recent rain, so different seasons can give the wetlands a very different look, from drier bush edges to fuller water bodies and greener creekside growth.
Plants and Animals
Habitat restoration is a big part of what defines this place. The site includes 430,000 native plantings, among them 20,000 shrubs and trees, along with 100 nesting boxes for birds, possums and gliders. Natural bush and regrowth have been encouraged across the wetlands, and some areas have been deliberately left without pathways to protect sensitive habitat, including Wallum Froglet country.
Berrinba Wetlands is also part of a broader Scrubby Creek corridor with recognised habitat value. Birdlife is a major drawcard, but the wetlands also support a wider mix of local fauna linked to creekside vegetation, open water and recovering bushland.
