Pencil Pine Cascades is a short and easy 100-metre, grade 2 walk located in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania. It’s a quick, 10-minute walk that offers a lovely opportunity to experience the beauty of the area without straying far from the main path.
The cascades are situated along Pencil Pine Creek and are easily visible from the road as you cross a bridge just before entering the national park. If you’re staying at Cradle Mountain Lodge, you can take a short 50-metre walk from the car park to get a great view of the cascades from the bridge. Just across the road, you'll find the Kynvet Falls track, which takes you to nearby Pencil Pine Falls and Kynvet Falls, adding a bit more adventure if you’re keen to explore further. It’s a perfect spot for a quick, scenic stop while taking in the natural beauty of the park.
Grade 2 (Easy) -Â
A Gentle Introduction to Inclines: Grade 2 on the
AWTGS represents easy walking tracks that offer a slightly more challenging experience compared to Grade 1. Similar to Grade 1, no prior bushwalking experience is required. The track surface is typically hardened or compacted and may have gentle hill sections or occasional steps. The total distance of a Grade 2 walk is typically no greater than 10 kilometers. These walks are still suitable for families with a bit more experience or those seeking a gentle introduction to some inclines.

About the region
Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is in the Central Highlands area of Tasmania (Australia), 165 kilometres northwest of Hobart. The park contains many walking trails, and is where hikes along the well-known Overland Track usually begin. Major features are Cradle Mountain and Barn Bluff in the northern end, Mount Pelion East, Mount Pelion West, Mount Oakleigh and Mount Ossa in the middle and Lake St Clair in the southern end of the park. The park is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
