Hike overview
The Manna Gums Track offers a wonderfully varied 5.2 kilometre trek that highlights the contrasting environments within the Mount Beckworth Scenic Reserve. Starting from the Manna Gums Campground, this grade 3 walk typically takes between two and three hours to complete. The journey begins under the canopy of the tall, smooth-barked Manna Gums that give the area its name, providing a cool and shaded start as the trail heads northwest. This initial section involves a steady climb through the forest as you make your way up toward the main ridgeline.
Once you reach the ridge, the track turns south and joins the Northern Ridge Track. The landscape opens up here, transitioning from the sheltered gully into more exposed woodland dominated by weathered granite. Following the spine of the ridge leads you directly to the Mount Beckworth summit at 634 metres. At the top, the iconic lone pine tree provides a focal point for the massive granite outcrops, which serve as the perfect spot to sit and look out over the expansive Victorian volcanic plains and distant mountain ranges.
For the return journey, you can retrace your steps along the ridge before taking a clever shortcut via the Link Track. This path leads you directly back down to the Manna Gums Campground, effectively turning the hike into a partial loop. This variation is often preferred by walkers as it provides a fresh perspective of the eastern slopes and a more direct descent through the timbered gullies. It is a fantastic way to experience the transition from the rugged, rocky heights back to the peaceful, towering gums of the valley floor.

Planning this hike? Most incidents develop before you even start. Safe outcomes depend on how navigation, hydration, environment, load and judgement work together. Small oversights can compound quickly in Australian conditions. See how it happens in the Hiking Safety Systems Foundations. Then use the Hiking Safety Systems, planning calculators, and make sure a trusted contact has your trip plan before heading out.

Getting there
Getting to the trailhead: Mount Beckworth Scenic Reserve.
Located on the eastern slopes of the reserve, the Manna Gums Visitor Area is accessed by following the main entrance tracks that lead through the lower forest gullies. This area is nestled among tall, smooth-barked Manna Gums, offering a more sheltered and timbered environment compared to the exposed ridgelines above. The drive in involves unsealed forest roads that are generally accessible for two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry weather. Hikers will find a dedicated parking area near the picnic facilities, serving as the primary trailhead for the Manna Gums Track and the southern forest loops.

About the region
Mount Beckworth Scenic Reserve, located approximately 110 km northwest of Melbourne near the town of Clunes, is a distinctive granite outcrop rising above the surrounding plains. The reserve is best known for its exposed rock formations, scattered eucalypts, and the iconic “Lollipop Tree”, a lone pine planted in 1918 by students from Glendaruel Primary School.
A network of informal walking tracks leads to the summit, where hikers are rewarded with expansive views across central Victoria. Navigation can be less defined in places due to the rocky terrain, so care is required when route finding, particularly off the main footpads.
The reserve includes three free campgrounds — Cork Oaks, Manna Gums, and The Dam. Basic facilities such as picnic tables and barbecues are available, with toilets located at The Dam campground. Conditions are unsealed and can vary depending on weather.
Mount Beckworth supports a surprisingly diverse ecosystem. More than 250 plant species have been recorded, including a range of native orchids. The remnant eucalypts and native vegetation play an important role in stabilising the shallow granite soils and supporting local biodiversity.
Wildlife is present but not always obvious. Birdlife is abundant, including honeyeaters, parrots, and birds of prey. Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums, gliders, and koalas also occur in the reserve, though sightings are less frequent.
