Hike at a Glance

Quick overview: The Murchison River Loop Walk in Western Australia's Kalbarri National Park, just 599km from the capital city, is a challenging 9km circuit that starts and ends at Natures Window Car Park. As a Grade 4 hard trail, the walk offers a closer look at the Murchison River's immense erosive power through stunning gorges and red and white banded rock formations. The trail follows the cliff's edge, descends to the riverside, and winds through sandy beaches and towering river red gums, before gradually climbing back to the starting point. Cooling swims are a possibility in permitted seasons, while the cooler months from May to October are recommended for hiking due to the summer heat.

Max elevation: 118m

This walk offers a unique experience, particularly for those interested in geology (which I know nothing about). The striking red and white banded rocks that line the river gorge are fascinating, and the overhanging rock layers show interesting signs of being shaped by plant roots over time. There are some excellent lookout points along the trail, with shaded seating areas where you can take a break and enjoy the view. The walk is well-maintained, with trails accessible from the parking area.
