Field test and first impressions
I have worn every generation of the SNOWGUM Cooper boots since reviewing the Mk2 in 2016 and the Mk3 in 2018. Each version has built upon the previous design, and the Cooper line has earned a reputation for being one of the most reliable and best value hiking boots in Australia. The newly released Cooper Mk4 continues that evolution with several practical upgrades that make it the most refined version yet.
The Mk4 stays true to the Cooper identity as an affordable, comfortable and versatile all-round hiking boot. It suits day walkers, new hikers, youth groups and anyone wanting dependable performance without needing a premium price tag.

What is new in the Mk4
SNOWGUM has introduced several practical upgrades in the Mk4 that improve fit, comfort and overall usability.
- More supportive footbed: The Mk4 features a firmer, better structured footbed that provides increased support through the arch and heel, improving comfort over longer distances.
- Improved tensioning hooks: The four upper hooks on each boot make it easier to fine tune lace tension across the boot. While they do not lock the laces in place like some premium locking-eyelet systems, they still provide better control than the Mk3.
- Slightly wider last: The Mk4 has a more generous fit across the forefoot, which is great for broader feet or thicker hiking socks, and a noticeable improvement over the Mk3.
- Material and durability upgrades: Earlier issues such as lace wear and toe rand abrasion have been addressed through stronger components and refinements to the upper.
Individually these updates may seem small, but together they noticeably improve the boot’s comfort, stability and fit.

Comfort and performance on the trail
True to the Cooper reputation, the Mk4 feels comfortable the moment you pull it on. There is generous padding around the ankle, a well cushioned tongue and a secure heel hold that prevents slipping. The wider toe box provides more room for natural foot splay and reduces pressure on long days out.
The VaporTEC waterproof membrane continues to perform well. The boots stay dry through wet grass, shallow creek crossings, muddy trails and morning dew. Like any waterproof hiking boot there are realistic limits. The tongue gusset sits roughly 5 cm below the collar, so water deeper than this can enter unless you use gaiters. Waterproofing can be maintained long term with occasional re-treatment using products such as Nikwax.
Breathability is good for a waterproof boot. I experienced minimal heat build-up, even on warm days, thanks to the Cordura mesh panels and moisture wicking lining.
The outsole remains one of the Cooper’s strongest features. Traction is steady and predictable across rock, gravel, leaf litter and damp surfaces. The shock absorbing sole and Phylon midsole help reduce foot fatigue and manage uneven terrain well. The mid-height ankle support offers a balance between stability and freedom of movement.

Build quality and materials
The Mk4 continues with the robust construction that has defined the Cooper line.
- Cow Suede Leather and Cordura Mesh: This combination balances durability with comfort. The suede provides strong abrasion resistance in high wear areas where the boot brushes against rock, roots and scrub. The Cordura mesh keeps weight down and improves airflow, reducing heat build-up that often leads to sweaty feet late in the day.
- Brushed Rubber Toe and Heel Guards: These guards add impact protection against rocks and help the boot last longer in rough terrain.
- VaporTEC Waterproof Membrane: VaporTEC works on the same principle as membranes like Gore-Tex. The micropores are small enough to stop water droplets entering, yet large enough to allow sweat vapour to escape. This helps keep feet dry from both outside water and internal moisture, which is essential for preventing blisters on warm and humid Australian trails.
- Phylon (EVA) Midsole: Phylon is a lightweight EVA foam often used in trail runners. It provides cushioning and shock absorption without the weight penalty of a polyurethane midsole. This helps reduce foot fatigue over long distances.
- Plastic Shank: The shank adds torsional stability underfoot, helping the boot resist twisting on uneven ground and providing extra support when carrying a day pack or lightweight overnight pack.
- Fit and Sizing: The Mk4 uses a slightly wider last than the Mk3. Fit is true to size and the extra width accommodates thicker hiking socks and broad feet more comfortably than previous models.
- Weight: 1.1 kg
The durability concerns that existed in older models, such as lace wear and toe rand abrasion, appear to have been resolved in this release. Stitching is clean and consistent and the upper feels strong while still allowing flex.

Care and maintenance
Proper boot care is not only about extending the life of your gear, it is also an important part of responsible hiking and good Leave No Trace practice. Cleaning your boots after every trip helps remove grit that wears down the materials, restores waterproof performance and prevents odours.
More importantly, it reduces the risk of spreading soil-borne diseases such as Phytophthora cinnamomi (Cinnamon Fungus), a destructive pathogen that can be transported in mud trapped in boot treads. Taking a few minutes to clean your boots protects both your investment and Australia’s fragile ecosystems.
According to SNOWGUM, to keep the Mk4 performing well:
- Brush off dirt after each hike. Use a stiff brush for the outsole.
- Wipe the upper with warm soapy water. Do not machine wash under any circumstances.
- Remove the inner soles occasionally to allow the boot to fully air out.
- Dry boots away from heaters or direct heat sources.
- When beading reduces, SNOWGUM recommends using Nikwax Water Repellency Spray to restore waterproof performance.

Final thoughts
The SNOWGUM Cooper Mk4 is the most polished version of this long running Cooper boot series. It remains comfortable, stable, durable and genuinely waterproof within real world limits. The refined footbed, improved lacing system and wider last make noticeable differences on the trail.
For its price point, it continues to be one of the best value waterproof boots available in Australia, with an RRP of $179.95 and a Club Price of $99.95. Whether you are new to hiking, gearing up for day walks or simply wanting a dependable boot without the cost of premium brands, the Cooper Mk4 is an excellent choice.
