This rail trail is proposed and is not yet open. The alignment passes through private property. Trespassing on the alignment is prohibited.
This proposed trail will lead you from the charming town of Westerway, boasting a primary school, corner shop, and a selection of tourist havens including cafes and accommodation, to the very threshold of Mt Field National Park.
The path itself unfolds alongside the picturesque Tyenna River, mirroring the gentle curves of the road. As you traverse the corridor, enveloped by World Heritage beauty, you'll encounter only a handful of road crossings near the National Park. The majority of the trail promises an uncomplicated and accessible journey through fragrant eucalyptus and casuarina forests.
Intriguingly, remnants of the railway's past linger. The track and sleepers remain in place, a silent testament to a bygone era. While commercial operations ceased nearly two decades ago, with timber transportation shifting to trucks, this section of the track hasn't received significant maintenance for roughly 40 years. The Derwent Valley Rail Trail, with its blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue, has the potential to become a cherished pathway for exploration.
