Launch of Trail Mate: Your Hiking Search Assistant

09 September 2025

I’m excited to introduce Trail Mate, a new advanced search tool designed to help bushwalkers and hikers prepare for their adventures with confidence and ease. Powered by trusted resources from Trail Hiking Australia, it’s an intelligent chat assistant that gives you clear, concise answers to your hiking questions in real time.

“If you’re wondering how much water to carry on a summer day hike, or what size pack to take on a three-day trek, Trail Mate can give you instant, practical answers before linking you to more info.”

As more Australians take to the trails, many still face challenges finding reliable information. Scattered advice, misinformation on social media, and a lack of confidence can make hiking feel daunting. Trail Mate bridges this gap by delivering straightforward, practical guidance drawn directly from Australia’s most comprehensive hiking knowledge base.

I created Trail Mate to make it easier for people to find information and prepare for their hikes,” says Darren Edwards, founder of Trail Hiking Australia.

“Whether you’re choosing gear, planning a safe day walk, or tackling a multi-day trek, Trail Mate gives you instant access to information you can trust. It’s about reducing guesswork, saving time, and keeping people safe while they explore.

Trail Mate’s role is simple but powerful: to help hikers feel prepared before stepping onto the trail. From safety tips and gear selection to hike planning checklists, it provides you with clear advice in a friendly, conversational way — with links to more detailed guides when you need them.

Unlike general AI tool, Trail Mate is trained exclusively on my hand-researched, factual content from the Trail Hiking Australia website. It won’t pull from unverified sources, or the broader internet. The goal isn’t to replace my site’s content, but to make it easier for you to find it. Trail Mate acts as a smart navigation tool, giving you a quick, reliable answer and then linking you directly to the detailed information you need to be better prepared and safer on the trail.

You might be wary of AI tools due to concerns about misinformation, unreliable answers, and privacy of your conversations. I share those concerns. That’s why Trail Mate is different. Unlike many AI tools, Trail Mate processes each question independently, does not store conversations, and never shares chat history with third parties.

Privacy was really important to me when developing Trail Mate,” Darren explains. “I wanted people to feel confident that they can ask anything without their information being saved or tracked. It’s about supporting hikers, not collecting their data.

Trail Mate is available now on the Trail Hiking Australia website and will continue to grow with new features and refinements based on community feedback.

With Trail Mate, you can:

  • Get instant guidance on places to walk, gear, planning, and safety.
  • Dive deeper into essential hiking topics by exploring the linked resources.

With Trail Mate, Trail Hiking Australia is taking another step towards making hiking safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for everyone.
