Launch of THINK Before You Hike Campaign to Promote Safer Hiking Practices

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — Darren Edwards, Founder of Trail Hiking Australia, has officially launched the THINK Before You Hike campaign to empower hikers with the knowledge and preparation needed for safe and enjoyable outdoor adventures. The campaign introduces the innovative THINK Framework, a simple yet comprehensive checklist to guide hikers in selecting the right trail, gearing up, planning effectively, and understanding the environment they’re entering.

Hiking offers endless opportunities for exploration, physical fitness, and connection with nature. However, as Darren explains, preparation is crucial to avoid common risks such as getting lost, underestimating difficulty, or being ill-equipped.

Every successful adventure begins with preparation,” said Darren Edwards. “The THINK framework provides a clear and practical approach to help hikers make informed decisions and stay safe on the trails. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or new to hiking, THINK encourages you to pause and plan before you head out.

The THINK Framework

The acronym THINK breaks down into five essential steps for pre-hike preparation:

  • T = Trail: Is the trail suitable for your fitness and experience? Check official sources for time, length, and difficulty.
  • H = Hiking Gear: Do you have the right footwear, clothing, and safety essentials like maps and first aid kits?
  • I = Itinerary: Have you researched the route, identified backups, and informed someone of your plans?
  • N = Need: Do you have enough food, water, and navigation tools, and have you packed a personal locator beacon?
  • K = Knowledge: Do you understand the terrain, weather conditions, and potential risks of the area?

Each component is designed to reduce risks, enhance confidence, and ensure that hikers return home safely.

Why THINK Matters

By focusing on preparation, THINK aims to address common issues that arise from misjudged trail conditions or inadequate preparation and equipment. Missteps in planning can lead to fatigue, injuries, or even emergencies. THINK equips hikers with the tools and knowledge to prevent these scenarios.

Preparation is key,” Darren added. “I want hikers to not only explore the beauty of Australia’s trails but to do so safely and with confidence. THINK Before You Hike empowers individuals to stay safe, explore more, and #ExploreSafe.
