Hiking Safety Systems Framework Launch

PRESS RELEASE

The Hiking Safety Systems Framework Introduced as a Structured Model for Safer Bushwalking in Australia

Melbourne, Australia – February 2026

Darren Edwards, Founder of Trail Hiking Australia, has released The Hiking Safety Systems Framework, a structured safety model designed to strengthen planning, supervision and field judgement in Australian hiking and bushwalking environments.

The framework defines hiking safety as the interaction of eight interdependent functional systems: Navigation and Positioning; Environmental Protection; Hydration and Fuel; Load Carrying and Mobility; Injury and Medical Response; Communication and Rescue; Equipment Reliability; and Decision-Making and Judgement. Decision-making is recognised as the integrating system that governs how the others perform under pressure.

Rather than focusing on isolated mistakes or equipment lists, the model describes incidents as cascading system failure. When one system degrades, pressure transfers. When multiple systems weaken simultaneously, minor issues can escalate rapidly. The framework provides a structured method for identifying and stabilising system strain before incidents develop.

Developed specifically for Australian conditions, the model reflects environmental realities including heat, ultraviolet exposure, remoteness, alpine volatility, bushfire risk and variable communication coverage. It offers a practical structure for outdoor educators, group leaders, bushwalking clubs and experienced hikers seeking a deliberate approach to risk management.

The aim of the framework is not to add complexity,” said Darren Edwards. “It is to provide clarity. Most hiking incidents begin with subtle system weaknesses rather than dramatic events. By recognising interaction early, leaders can intervene before pressure escalates.

The publication includes detailed explanations of each safety system, a cascading failure model, Australian case examples and structured planning tools for supervision and scenario-based learning.

The Hiking Safety Systems Framework (Version 1.0, 2026) is available as a downloadable publication through Trail Hiking Australia.
