New Australian hiking safety certification focuses on decision-making under real conditions

PRESS RELEASE

HSSF Practitioner Certification assesses how hikers recognise risk and respond as conditions change

Trail Hiking Australia launches the HSSF Practitioner Certification, a scenario-based assessment of real-world decision-making on the trail.

Melbourne, Australia – April 2026

Most hiking safety advice focuses on what to carry and how to prepare. A new Australian-developed certification is shifting that focus toward how decisions are made as conditions change.

Trail Hiking Australia has launched the HSSF Practitioner Certification, built around The Hiking Safety Systems Framework. The framework treats hiking safety as the interaction of multiple systems, including navigation, hydration, environmental exposure, and decision-making.

Rather than relying on checklists or theoretical knowledge, the certification assesses how hikers respond to developing situations under realistic conditions.

Most incidents don’t happen suddenly,” said Darren Edwards, founder of Trail Hiking Australia. “They develop gradually as small pressures begin to interact. By the time something feels wrong, it’s often been building for hours.

The HSSF Practitioner Certification uses scenario-based assessments to evaluate a participant’s ability to:

  • recognise early signs of system strain
  • understand how pressure transfers between systems
  • make timely decisions before situations escalate

The certification reflects real-world hiking conditions, where factors such as heat, fatigue, navigation drift, and time pressure interact and compound.

Participants who successfully complete the assessment receive a certification valid for five years, with results independently verifiable.

The launch represents a shift from preparation-focused advice toward a more applied model of hiking safety, centred on early recognition and decision-making under pressure.
