New Australian Hiking Guide Explores How Small Decisions Shape Safety on the Trail
The Capable Hiker moves beyond gear lists and safety rules to examine the judgement, preparation and decisions that help hikers recognise problems before they become emergencies.
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — 21 September 2026
Trail Hiking Australia founder Darren Edwards has released The Capable Hiker: A Practical Guide to Hiking in Australia, a new guide built around a simple idea: serious trouble on a hike is often not the result of one dramatic mistake, but the accumulation of smaller decisions, changing conditions and missed opportunities to respond.
A later-than-planned start. Weather that is deteriorating faster than expected. A route taking longer than it should. Fatigue changing the way decisions are made. None of these necessarily creates an emergency on its own. But together, seemingly reasonable choices can gradually turn a manageable situation into something much harder to control.
That progression sits at the heart of The Capable Hiker.
“Most people don’t need another list telling them what to pack,” Edwards said. “They need to understand why things matter, what changes when conditions stop matching the plan, and how to recognise that early enough to still have good options.”
Rather than treating hiking safety as a collection of isolated rules, the book follows the full arc of a hike across seven parts: choosing an appropriate walk, building physical and mental readiness, planning for real conditions, understanding what to carry and why, navigating and making decisions on the trail, responding when things go wrong, and developing capability through experience.
Across 34 chapters, Edwards explains the reasoning behind recommendations rather than simply telling readers what to do. The aim is to help hikers develop judgement they can apply to unfamiliar trails, changing conditions and situations that no checklist can anticipate.
The book draws on decades of bushwalking, extensive hiking throughout Australia, remote long-distance treks overseas, and years spent researching and communicating hiking safety through Trail Hiking Australia.
It is written for people preparing for their first hike, but also for experienced hikers who may have built considerable practical experience while still carrying gaps in areas such as navigation, weather, risk assessment, emergency communication or decision-making.
“Being capable doesn’t mean eliminating every risk or knowing exactly what will happen,” Edwards said. “It means preparing well, noticing when reality is starting to differ from the plan, and being willing to change what you’re doing before the situation makes that decision for you.”
Despite its focus on preparation and safety, Edwards says the purpose of the book is not to make hiking feel more complicated or dangerous.
“The reason for learning all of this is still very simple,” he said. “It gives you more confidence to go out, explore somewhere new and enjoy being there.”
The Capable Hiker: A Practical Guide to Hiking in Australia is available now as a paperback and Kindle eBook through Amazon, with the eBook also available through Kobo and Google Play Books.
