Yellow Beach Coastal Reserve offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s geological history, with some of the most recently formed rocks waiting to be explored. The sandstones at the rear of the beach are rich in dark organic matter, and the sands themselves bear traces of the erosion of these rock features. At the southern end of the beach, a headland reveals granite outcrops, remnants of molten rock that intruded deep within the Earth’s crust around 380 million years ago. These rocks offer a glimpse into the island’s ancient past and serve as a striking contrast to the more recent sedimentary layers visible along the western section of the beach. These sedimentary rocks, formed only around 2 million years ago, tell the story of a time when sea levels were much higher, and the area was submerged under water. As you walk towards Lady Barron, you’ll notice the layers of sediment that were deposited between 10,000 and 100,000 years ago, shaped by the changing sea levels and increased rainfall. These rocks, rich in small quartz grains, shell fragments, and fine organic particles, provide the characteristic black colouring, and you may even spot rare plant fossils among them.
The beach also offers fantastic views of the surrounding islands and glimpses of Franklin Sound towards Cape Barren Island. With calm, shallow waters, Yellow Beach is an ideal location for swimming, snorkelling, and kayaking, making it a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Visitors can take advantage of the amenities, which include a shaded gas BBQ, picnic tables, a shelter, tank water, and toilets. The car park can accommodate around 20 vehicles, and the beach is a favourite for community events and children’s birthday parties.
For those looking to explore more of the coastline, the Yellow Beach trail offers a scenic 3.5 km round trip. This easy walk takes you along the coast and back towards the boat slip and fuel depot in Lady Barron, providing a leisurely way to take in the stunning views of the surrounding islands.
