Ballarat’s Regenerating Bushland on Wadawurrung Country

Overview

Woowookarung Regional Park is a 641-hectare bushland park on Ballarat’s edge, adjoining Ballarat East, Canadian and Mount Clear. Established in 2016, it brings together former state forest and plantation land in a landscape that still feels close to the city while holding a distinctly bush character of messmate stringybark forest, grass trees and native heath.

What gives the park its particular character is that sense of change. Some parts remain intact forest, while other areas are regenerating after earlier plantation use, so the bush here has a younger, more open feel in places than older Victorian forests. That mix makes Woowookarung feel less like a single uniform block of bush and more like a patchwork of recovering country around Ballarat.

Highlights

Woowookarung is known for its rugged bushland and for the way its forested slopes and ridgelines form part of Ballarat’s southern backdrop. The scenic character is less about one dramatic landmark and more about the texture of the landscape: open regenerating ground, thicker pockets of messmate forest, low heath and stands of grass trees that give the park a strong local identity.

Scenic lookouts add to that sense of relief and elevation, and the contrast between denser bush and more open country gives different parts of the park a noticeably different feel. In spring and autumn, wildflowers bring extra colour through the heath and understorey.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are the standout seasons here, when wildflowers are at their best and the bush is often at its most colourful. These shoulder seasons also suit the park’s open forest and heathland character, with softer light and milder conditions than the peak of summer.

At other times of year, Woowookarung still works well as a close-to-town bush escape, but spring and autumn are when its grass trees, heath and flowering plants are most likely to leave an impression.

Plants and Animals

The park’s vegetation includes messmate stringybark, native heath and prominent grass trees, with a mix of remnant bush and regenerating areas gradually knitting the landscape back together. That ongoing regrowth is a big part of the park’s ecology, creating a mosaic of vegetation ages and structures across the reserve.

Woowookarung is well known for wildlife, with kangaroos and echidnas regularly noted here along with a range of birdlife. Wildflowers are another strong part of the park’s natural appeal, especially through the heath and open bushland in the cooler seasons.

Culture and Heritage

Woowookarung, meaning “place of plenty”, is part of the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung Aboriginal people. The park’s planning and future direction have been shaped in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners as well as the local community, reflecting the continuing cultural connection of Country here.
